Huntsville’s ISO rate drops

The citizens of Huntsville will enjoy lower insurance rates soon due to a new ISO rating of 4. The new rating should results in a savings of 15-20 percent in homeowners insurance rates.

In other business, the City Council approved an appropriation ordinance in the amount of $ 6, 447. 90 for the purchase of LaserFiche software, hardware, installation, training and support. It also included $ 6, 655 for carpet replacement at city hall; $ 3, 000 to the Huntsville Police Department for the Arkansas Municipal Leagues Legal Defense Fund, and finally $ 4, 680 for Fire Department equipment that will be funded by a grant from the Arkansas Association of Resource Conservation.

The council approved an ordinance accepting a zoning map and enacting an emergency clause to put the ordinance into immediate action. The planning commission has been working on the zoning map for nearly a year.

A public hearing date was set for May 27 at 6 p. m. to hear views about the annexation of an island of land surrounded by city lands.

The council heard the first reading of an ordinance declaring a drug free workplace for non CDL employees for the city. The lengthy ordi- nance will be read a second time at the June meeting.

Mayor Bates brought up designing an ordinance to limit the number of dogs at a residence. Alderman Darrel Trahan expressed concerns over limiting the number of pets a homeowner could have. A current ordinance allows for five pets with any over that considered a kennel. Trahan suggested enforcing the current ordinances instead of adding more.

The resident in question will be looked into by the city animal control officer Jason Polley. Polley explained he will visit and make sure all the pets are licensed and have had their shots. He said one visit usually resolved the issues.

The council will meet May 27 for the public hearing and on June 2 for its regular meeting.
