40 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Thursday, Sept. 5, 1968 Sept. 6 is the first day an Independent candidate for municipal office may file for office. Pea Ridge will elect two alderman for each of its two wards which are divided by Highway 94. Arkansas Highway Department crews apply a re-surface job to Highways 94 / 72 between the intersection south of town and the downtown business section. The project extended on Highway 72 all the way east to the intersection of Highway 62 and the AHD applied its energies on state roads that appeared in greatest danger of suffering during the winter ahead. Walter E. Harring, 69, of Pea Ridge, was killed in a traffic accident on the way home from his wife Freida's funeral.
30 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene Wednesday, Sept. 6, 1978 For residents of Pea Ridge, the best news to develop from the political forum last Thursday in Rogers came during an interview with Senator Jim Caldwell - news on the paving of Highway 265. Senator Caldwell told the Graphic-Scene's Howell Medders and Jack Beisner that he has "assurances " that the highway will be paved and that bid for the paving will probably be advertised in Jan. 1979. He explained that he had been working for some time to obtain this assurance and is now confident he can report he has it from highway officials. The Blackhawk booster drive to raise a $ 1, 000 in contributions has passed the half-way mark.
20 Years Ago The Times of Northeast Benton County Thursday, Sept. 8, 1988 Kenny Shaw, director of Benton County Emergency Services, said last week that the residents of Northwest Benton County with a 662 prefix on their telephone number may not be served by the 911 emergency service. Shaw said, however, that the 911 Committee is working with Contel Telephone to make service available on the exchange if it is at all possible by the summer of 1990. The administrative coordinator of Volunteer Ambulance Service said this week that there is a shortage of volunteers to respond to daytime emergencies. Coordinator Joan Bachman said Monday that based on current manning schedules, a person in need of emergency care could wait as long as 25 minutes before someone from VAS who is qualified arrives to assist. She said that there are from 45 to 50 volunteers in VAS and 23 of them are qualified as first responders, but most of them, because they work during the day, can only be on call during nighttime hours. Hinton Realty will move to the Day Service Station building in downtown Pea Ridge within a week or two, broker Mark Hinton said. The rock building, built in 1930 by professional baseball player Clyde "Pea Ridge "Day, will be remodeled to accommodate the business, Hinton said. The building is now owned by Charles Day, son of the man that built it.
10 Years Ago The Times of Northeast Benton County Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998 The U. S. Postal Service has added a third rural route for Pea Ridge. Postmaster Debbie Anderson said that the new route only has 106 patrons, but it will grow fast. She added," It is further evidence Pea Ridge is growing. "
The Pea Ridge City Council voted unanimously to take an annexation ordinance, and assured some 35 residents who showed up at the special meeting Aug. 25, that the issue would not be brought up again unless Little Flock threatens expansion of its current annexation plans.
Boyd McNiel, 35, of Pea Ridge has filed to run for a seat on the City Council. The council seat is now held by Rick Webb, who has filed for reelection.
