Alumni from Pea Ridge schools support community
Posted on Wednesday, July 2, 2008
Pea Ridge High School "Alumni Day," sponsored by the PRHS Alumni Association, will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 12, at the High School cafeteria. All graduates of Pea Ridge High School, all former teachers and administrators, and others who attended the high school are invited to take part in and enjoy Alumni Day.
The Alumni Association seeks to support the Pea Ridge schools by helping alumni stay connected and informed about current school life, providing scholarship aid to new PRHS graduates, and helping school organizations with certain special activities. This year, the PRHS Alumni Association awarded two college scholarships to graduates of the Class of 2008: Haley Walker, who is registered at the University of Arkansas; and Emma Eoff, who plans to attend NWACC. The scholarships are each for $ 500, and are renewable for a second semester.
The emphasis for Alumni Day is the renewal of contacts and friendships from school days. Those who attend can expect time available to reminisce and enjoy visiting with old school friends, and to meet others across generation lines. The traditions of Pea Ridge High School extend from 1916 to 2008, but are also considered an extension of the heritage of the Pea Ridge Academy and Masonic College which originated in 1874.
Featured on the July 12 program will be music on the piano by Johnny Garrison. Garrison is himself a PRHS alumni, a member of the Class of 1956. He was famous during his own school days for his energetic piano work at school assemblies and stirring up excitement at Blackhawk pep rallies. A former forward in Blackhawk basketball, Garrison was also known for his deadly corner shots. He is an Assembly of God minister, and has several instrumental recordings to his credit.
The noon meal will be provided by the Pea Ridge Subway, and will be available on a freewill donation basis. There will be a drawing for prizes each hour on the hour. The gathered alumni will also elect three members of the Alumni Board to replace board members whose terms are expiring. Members of the Alumni Board are elected to serve three-year terms.
Also, this year the Alumni Association is sponsoring the Blackhawks Care Project, a way of supporting our local military men and women who are deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. Drop-off boxes will be placed in several local businesses to collect personal items for the troops, such as phone cards, canned fruit or peanut butter, condiments, microwavable popcorn or soups, Gatorade, juices, coffee or tea bags, snack foods such as cookies, nuts, pudding cups, toiletries such as face soap, deodorant, eye drops, foot powder, or dusting cloths, and various other helpful items.
