40 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Thursday, July 11, 1968 Persons anxious to see a school band established in Pea Ridge continued to add to the fund being built for use in buying school-owned instruments. Superintendent Andrew Widener announced that a total of $ 70 had been added to the amount turned in at the school within the past few days. Miss Pea Ridge contestants are Rhonda Brassfield, Joyce Mahurin, Margie Byer, Jean Brown, Carol David, Darla Jones, Shirley Rickert and Laurie Vansandt.
30 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene Wednesday, July 12, 1978 A street improvement bond issue, insurance, telephone company franchise and a citysponsored boxing team occupied the Pea Ridge City Council at its July meeting at City Hall. The council approved the street bond issue, changing insurance companies and a city-sponsored boxing team. The council requested additional phone lines to City Hall. Pea Ridge voters have until Nov. 7 to decide if they are willing to pay an additional five mills in city property tax to provide financing for a street improvement bond issue. Consistently hot days and warm nights and the rise in air conditioning usage resulted in total output by SWEPCO for more then one million kilowatts during the 30-day period ending July 5, according to a company spokesman. The spokesman said SWEPCO is not having difficulty in meeting the high summertime demand and barring major equipment failure, does not anticipate any problems.
20 Years Ago The Times of Northeast Benton County Thursday, July 14, 1988 A spokesman for the Arkansas Highway Department said Friday that the completion of improvement to Arkansas Highway 265 may be slightly delayed because a utility company has not completed moving telephone lines.
The general chairman of last week’s Pea Ridge Fair praised participants and spectators for making the festival an enjoyable event. There was no praise, however, for Ozark Amusement, the company that was scheduled to provide the carnival. The carnival never arrived.
Winners at the Pea Ridge Fair were: Karen Light, queen; Tia Kvamso, first runner up; Lori Lee, Miss Congeniality; Dove Crabtree, 93, oldest woman; Herbert Stroud, 86, oldest man; Mickie Jean Burns and DeWayne Barnett, Tiny Tots.
10 Years Ago The Times of Northeast Benton County Thursday, July 9, 1998 Last Thursday afternoon a Pea Ridge police officer spotted three juveniles on the city’s older water tower. The tower is fenced off and has “ No Trespassing” signs. The Rogers Fire Department’s Technical Rescue Team safely brought the kids down. Police Chief Tim Ledbetter, already in his vintage yellow and red Aeronca airplane for some late afternoon pleasure flying, flew directly to Pea Ridge. He circled the tower, checking tank entrance’s hatch which isn’t visible from the ground. The youths were arrested on charges of criminal trespass.
The primary objection among prospective Summit water project customers — the threat of annexation by the City of Pea Ridge — has been removed. The Pea Ridge City council has removed Ordinance 234, which allowed the city to annex property using city water.
The Pea Ridge Water Department continues to make progress on reducing water loss, extending water mains and modernizing the sewage treatment plant said Water Superintendent Robert Button.
