Suspected phone scam targeting parents of Fayetteville High students
Posted on Thursday, January 25, 2007
Someone purporting to sell ACT and SAT test preparation materials has been calling Fayetteville High School parents, claiming the school provided them with their names and asking for their credit card numbers to make the purchase.
The calls sound like a scam to obtain credit card numbers, said Alan Wilbourn, Fayetteville School District director of school / community relations. He said the school was recently informed by a few parents that they had received the calls.
The school does not release personal information about students and parents, and the caller allegedly claimed to get the information from the counselor's office, Wilbourn said. It also has a practice of remaining neutral when it comes to recommending private test preparation services, he continued.
"There are several test prep companies in town now, and we don't endorse any of them," Wilbourn said.
The caller claimed to be selling the preparation materials for the tests for about $ 110.
One should not give credit card numbers over the phone when receiving calls, Wilbourn said.
Wilbourn suggested anyone who receives such a call should try to take the number from caller ID and inform the police department.
