GREENLAND — Neither team could establish a foothold through two-and-a-half quarters Friday night at Dee Lee Gymnasium.
After seven ties and 12 lead changes, the Greenland Lady Pirates summoned a 6-0 spurt to break on top of Berryville for the remaining quarter-and-a-half of their 57-50 win.
“We found a way to win because it was nip and tuck,” said Alan Barton, Greenland head coach. “I’m proud of the girls’ effort.”
Undersized post player Shelby Alaniz scored 8 of her 14 points during the decisive third quarter, helping the Lady Pirates forge a 45-42 lead at the period’s conclusion. Barton said Alaniz’s small stature belies her fighting spirit.
“She’s 5-4 and probably weighs about 90 pounds, but she will not back down,” Barton said. “All that is is heart and guts.”
Emili Slamons scored all 14 of her points during the second and fourth quarters. Her 3-pointer from the right wing gave Greenland a 48-44 lead early in the final frame. Paige Anderson was the other Lady Pirate in double figures, scoring 10 points and assisting three of Greenland’s nine third quarter field goals.
The Lady Pirates (2-1) finished the night 20 of 49 from the field.
Turnovers were the Lady Bobcats’ undoing. Greenland’s pressure forced 24 Berryville (0-2) turnovers that were converted into 17 points. Berryville’s more passive zone defense forced only eight Greenland turnovers
The Lady Bobcats’ turnovers also limited their shot attempts. They were 15 of 35 from the field. Megan Gibbins and Elise Holman respectively led Berryville with 19 and 16 points.
Greenland returns to action Monday night at home against Prairie Grove. The two head coaches, Barton and Prairie Grove’s Kevin Froud, were former assistants at Greenland for erstwhile head coach Clay Reeves.
Berryville 73
Greenland 55 (sr. boys)
Berryville moved ahead of Greenland in the second quarter and led for the duration Friday night at Dee Lee Gymnasium.
The Bobcats’ eight-point halftime lead swelled to 13 after three quarters. They led by as many as 20 during the 73-55 victory. Berryville’s Levi Hereth scored 8 of his game-high 22 points during the third quarter, when he lined up two of his three 3-pointers.
K.J. Phillips scored 7 of his 17 during the third, and Caleb Price tallied 12 of his 18 before halftime. Junior guard Elijah Wolfe led Greenland with 16 points. Tyler Simpson and Herb Riggles respectively added 15 and 12 points.
Robert Smith’s pass to Chris Arnold on the right block led to an inside basket that cut Berryville’s lead to eight points with 2:55 to play in the third quarter. The Pirates could get no closer, as Berryville scored eight of the third quarter’s final 10 points.
The Bobcats had a decisive advantage at the foul line. They made 25-of-34 free throws. In contrast, Greenland was 3-of-8 from the line.
