Southwest squad piles up points against George

SPRINGDALE - Good field position and quick, explosive scoring drives enabled Springdale Southwest to run rampant over Springdale George Thursday 41-0 at Jarrell Williams Bulldog Stadium.
Only 1: 16 had ticked off the clock Thursday night before Southwest (4-2, 3-2 NWAC ) had taken a 6-0 lead on a 24-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Evan Johnson to Michael Fine.
It was the first of two Johnson-to-Fine connections on the night, and it capped a four-play drive that began at the George 44 after a Wrangler kickoff traveled a short distance.
The Wranglers attempted to answer the score and completed a 23-yard bomb to put them in Cougar territory, but George (1-5, 1-4 NWAC ) wound up going backwards because of penalties and poor pass protection.
Southwest immediately fired back with a good punt return from Tony Dennis to the George 35 and then Rahmon Taylor notched one of his two scoring runs, this one of the 16-yard variety, to put Southwest up 14-0 after a twopoint conversion pass.
"Everything we did on offense, it seemed to click for us," Southwest offensive coordinator Travis Frieson said.
The Cougar offense continued to click after Johnson picked off a George offering inside his own 20, and then led his teammates down the field offensively, culminating the drive with a 56-yard touchdown toss to Fine, who made a great catch.
"Evan Johnson had an excellent game," Frieson said. "We didn't have to throw much tonight because of our good running backs [Dennis and Taylor ] but I thought [Johnson ] and Michael Fine did good and even [Josh ] Paxton caught a two-point conversion pass. Our running game opened up the passing game a bit for us tonight."
Southwest ended the first half with a 6-yard touchdown run from Dennis to give the Cougars a 27-0 halftime advantage.
In the second half, Southwest recovered the opening kickoff at the George 24 when a Wrangler returner muffed the catch.
Three plays later, Taylor was in for the second time from 17 yards out for a 35-0 lead.
The Cougars etched their final score in the fourth quarter when Henry Hernandez came in a mop-up role at quarterback and kept it himself for a 6-yard touchdown to bring it to 41-0.
