Woodland shuts down Siloam

SILOAM SPRINGS - Consistent defensive play teamed with the occasional offensive outburst to propel the Woodland Cowboys to a 21-0 win over Siloam Springs on Friday night at Panther Stadium.
The Cowboys did little to diminish their 6. 4 points allowed per game average as they held the Junior Panthers (3-3 ) to 30 yards of offense in the first half and equaled or bettered that in the second half.
"Our defense has been very solid all year," Woodland coach Bobby Crockett said. "They are what carries us. We go as our defense goes. So far they've been playing great this year. We had another good performance out of them tonight."
Defense partially contributed to the Cowboys getting on the board first. A three and out on the Junior Panthers' first drive resulted in a punt from their own 20-yard line. Reid Holmes of Woodland did his share of the scoring work as he returned the ensuing punt 30 yards to the Siloam Springs 17.
Farico Baymon advanced the ball to the 2-yard line after a pair of runs, and Woodland quarterback Austin Allen called his own number for the score. Max Coffin added the first of three successful PATs on the night as the Cowboys took the 7-0 lead at 5: 30 of the first quarter.
"I didn't do a very good job of calling plays in the first half," Crockett said. "Siloam's defense did a very good job. I felt like we sputtered a little bit [in the first half ]. We talked about some things at half and we came out and moved the football after that and got a few things going."
One thing the Cowboys did have going in the first was excitement on its sideline with time dwindling down.
Allen hit Tyler Tuck on a short out pattern with less than a minute to go before halftime. Tuck lateraled the ball to Baymon and he rambled 70 yards to the Siloam Springs 20. Unfortunately for the Cowboys, the first of two interceptions on the night ended the drive.
The teams went to the lockerroom with the Cowboys up by a single score, but Woodland quickly upped its lead coming out for the second half.
Baymon had a pair of 14-yard runs and Allen hit Mark Hollenbeck for a 24-yard gainer. Allen and Tuck hooked up for the final 25 yards to put Woodland (5-1 ) virtually out of reach, considering its defensive dominance.
Woodland put the exclamation on the night as Baymon, who finished the game with 128 yards on 13 carries, burst 21 yards for a late fourth-quarter score.
The Cowboys next travel to Rogers to take on the Rogers High ninth grade squad.
In the eighth grade contest, Alex Brigoni scored with 1: 56 left in regulation and Ryan Starr's PAT gave Woodland a 21-20 come-frombehind win.
