Fayetteville decision leads to reduced Elkins attendance

ELKINS The Board of Education heard a report that 1, 146 students attended the district on the first day of school in Elkins on Monday.
This was actual number of kids that were here today, Elkins Superintendent Mike Harris said.
Middle School Principal Steve Denzer said they probably could have had a few more students based on phone calls he has received. About one-third of the Elkins city limits is covered by the Fayetteville School District, but that district decided not to approve requests for transfers to other districts for this year.
Fayetteville not transferring hurt our numbers, Denzer said. Since they wont let them transfer, even if they live three miles from here, we cant take them.
The board approved a change in its soft drink contract with Coca-Cola. The contract, set to expire in 2009, was modified as a fiveyear deal with the first year beginning in the current school year.
Harris said the company had requested the change due in large parts to changes in how such drinks can be sold at schools. High School Principal Becky Martin added they had already removed some vending machines and changed the contents in the remaining machines.
Under the contract, Coca-Cola guarantees it will give a minimum of $ 2, 000 each year towards scholarships, $ 1, 500 annually to the athletic department and an additional $ 900 in donations. Any additional revenue will come from commissions.
The company estimated the commissions, on top of the guaranteed donations, will add up to $ 11, 935 per year. That amount can fluctuate and is not guaranteed, Harris said.
