Second candidate files for mayoral race
Posted on Tuesday, August 12, 2008
Adam Fire Cat officially entered the Fayetteville mayoral race Monday, filing his nominating petition with the county clerk's office.
The filing period for municipal offices in nonpartisan elections opened Wednesday and will remain open until noon Aug. 26.
According to the county clerk's office, a candidate for a city of the first class is required to obtain 30 signatures of qualified registered voters on a nominating petition. A candidate filing for a race in a second-class city needs at least 10 signatures on a nominating petition.
Petitions are filed with the city clerk, who will make sure all the signatures are valid before filing the petition with the county clerk. Petitions must be filed in the county clerk's office by noon Aug. 26.
Candidates are also required to fill out a political practice pledge.
Non-incumbent candidates must file a statement of financial interest with the city by Sept. 1. A campaign contribution and expenditure report must be filed with the county either seven days before the election or 30 days after the election, depending on the amount of contributions and expenditures.
In Fayetteville, a first-class city, the mayor and city clerk positions are up for election as well as the Position 2 seat in all four wards.
Five candidates have made known their intentions to run for mayor, including Mayor Dan Coody, Alderman Lioneld Jordan, Walt Eilers, Steve Clark and Cat.
Eilers filed on Thursday.
City Clerk Sondra Smith has announced she will run for re-election.
The aldermen seats up for election are currently held by Ward 1 Alderman Brenda Thiel, Ward 2 Alderman Nancy Allen, Ward 3 Alderman Bobby Ferrell and Ward 4 Alderman Jordan.
Fayetteville residents Matthew Petty and Bernard Sulliban have announced their intentions to run for the Ward 2 seat held by Allen, who has said she will not seek re-election in November. Sarah Lewis, environmental consultant and chairman of the Fayetteville Council of Neighborhoods, hopes to fill Jordan's Ward 4 seat.
In the second-class cities of Elkins, Elm Springs, Greenland, Goshen, Johnson and Tontitown, all six council seats are up for election as well as the city recorder-treasurer position.
