Texas Hold’em tournament to benefit Shop with a Cop
Posted on Saturday, August 2, 2008
The Washington County Fraternal Order of Police will host its No Limit Texas Hold'em Tournament of Champions tonight to benefit the 2008 Shop with a Cop program.
The event will take place in the east wing of the Washington County Sheriff 's Office, 1155 Clydesdale Drive in Fayetteville. Dinner will be served between 4: 30 p.m. and 5: 30 p.m. and will include hot dogs, hamburgers, cole slaw, beans, chips, drinks and dessert. The Tournament of Champions begins at 6 p.m.
The entry fee for the tournament and dinner is $ 30. All proceeds benefit the Shop with a Cop program, which gives area needy children the chance to go on a one-hour shopping spree at a local Wal-Mart store to purchase items they need during the holiday season.
"We hope to sponsor 50 kids this year, but so far we have enough funding for about 23," Sheriff's Office Sgt. Brian Comstock said. "We give each of them $ 100, and they get to go through the store and purchase whatever they need within one hour."
Comstock said the annual event typically takes place around mid-December at the Wal-Mart Supercenter on Sixth Street.
Check-in for the Tournament of Champions begins at 5: 30 p.m. To register, call 444-5720.
