Fayetteville firefighters responded to two fires Tuesday evening. No injuries were reported in either blaze.

The first fire, at 204 W. South St., was called in at 6: 46 p. m., said Fayetteville Battalion Chief Terry Lawson.

Responding to the fire were three fire engines, two ladder trucks and the shift commander's vehicle. Upon arriving, firefighters found a large wood-frame two-story house in flames, Lawson said.

The fire originated in the kitchen and extended up the wall to the second floor and attic.

He said firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in about an hour.

The owner of the house is Katherine Adam, Lawson said.

The second fire was in a unit of a two-story apartment building at 2604 E. Kantz Drive, and was called in at 11: 22 p.m.

The apartment occupant, Sheila Collins, who called 911, stated that she was downstairs when the smoke detector woke her up and alerted her to the fire in the upstairs bedroom, Lawson said.

The apartment unit was in flames when two ladder trucks and three fire engines responded, Lawson said, and firefighters were on the scene for a little more than an hour before it was extinguished.

There was extensive damage to the bedroom from heat, smoke and fire, Lawson said, and smoke damage to the rest of the apartment. There was no damage to the seven other apartments in the building.

The Fayetteville Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of both fires.
