Northwest Arkansas Times Because of concerns about animal sacrifice, the Fayetteville Animal Shelter has not allowed adoption of black cats, white cats, black and white cats, black dogs, white dogs or black and white dogs in the days before Halloween. "The whole reason behind that is the satanic things that go on. They still happen," said Jill Hatfield, director of animal services. Halloween pranks on animals are another concern, she said. Hatfield said it's not just kids, and there are satanic rituals that happen around this time of year.

"Cult groups do use animals for sacrifice," she said.

Hatfield said shelters across the country have followed the practice of not adopting certain animals at Halloween for years.

She said there were no suspicious requests this year or last year, but, two years ago, someone tried to steal a black cat from the shelter. She believes it was a person who was denied an adoption earlier.

She said the Humane Society of the United States offers some animal safety tips for the holiday.

"Don't dress your dogs and cats up. It's already stressful enough. There are strangers coming to the door," Hatfield said.
