Ozark Album : Down to the river to pray
Posted on Sunday, June 22, 2008
Historically, rivers and streams have sustained Ozark folks in many physical ways: as a means of transportation, an aid to farming, a source of commerce and a destination for recreation. Many have found the region’s waterways to be a source of spiritual sustenance as well, as the rivers were often the location for the ritual of baptism. Here, over three dozen people of all ages are preparing for baptism, circa 1930. The location is believed to be Washington County. The Shiloh Museum would like to find out more information about the photo. If you can help, call 750-8165. Photo is courtesy of Mary Ellen Johnson.
