Residents won't pay more this year to have their trash hauled away, but an increase might be in the budget for 2009.

Siloam Springs Board of Directors approved a $ 1. 92 per ton increase last week for Roll Off Service Inc. to take Siloam Springs' trash to the Tontitown landfill. The new rate for Roll Off to take a ton of trash is $ 30. 82.

Tom Smith of Roll Off Service requested the rate increase in a June 25 letter.

"Due to the increased cost of fuel and petroleum products, I am forced to request a rate increase," Smith wrote.

The city will absorb the cost for the rest of this year, but an increase to the residents will likely be discussed during the 2009 budgeting process, City Administrator David Cameron said.

The $ 1. 25 increase residents started paying in January will be enough to cover the cost to haul away the trash, according to a memo from Randy Atkinson, director of the solid waste and street departments.

Residents pay $ 10. 50 per month for trash pickup.

The Roll Off increase is expected to cost the city $ 30, 750 for the rest of the year.

This is based on the 16, 010 tons of trash the company has hauled away in the first two quarters of this year.

The Roll Off rate retroactively went into effect Monday.
