DECATUR ó A benefit concert, featuring country western singer Jack Reeves, will be held July 19 in Veterans park as part of the Fun in the Park ń Save our School Fundraiser.

Jack will do his Nashville Saturday Night performance, with old rock and country music and impersonations of stars like Johnny Cash, Willy Nelson, Hank Williams, Jim Reeves, Tom Jones and Elvis Presley.

Jack has had a long career in music. He was named entertainer of the year by the Country Western Music Association in 1974, and has performed in Las Vegas, Hollywood, and as far away as Hawaii and Alaska.

Jack performs with his two sons Matt Reeves, 17, who plays the guitar, and Cole Reeves, 13, who plays bass guitar. In June, Matt won first place in the Colgate Country Showdown at Riverside Casino in Laughlin, Nev., and is headed to compete in the finals in Prescott, Ariz., in mid-September.

Jack is originally from Delight, Ark., and realized his talent for singing as a young boy in church. As a teenager, he spent a lot of time with his third cousin, Glenn Campbell, who he beat out for a singing part in their third-grade musical, he said with a laugh. Campbell encouraged Jack to become more involved in music.

Jack started his first band in North Little Rock in 1956. He was also a boxer for the Arkansas Golden Glove team, and he first met Elvis at a boxing match in Nashville, Tenn.

Jack said he loves singing and doing impersonations. With a sparkle in his eyes he explained, ě I grew up with those guys, and I loved them. I try to do a song like they would do it. î

While Jack is usually careful to choose benefits that are for a worthy cause, he was eager to help out local school children.

ě Iíll get out and swim a river if itís for school kidís, î he said.

Jack has a spot in his heart for kids, with eight children of his own. Since he moved to northwest Arkansas last fall with his wife Sue, his two youngest sons now attend Gravette High School.

Kyla Horton will be opening the show. She has been touring the state since she was 17, and has performed at festivals like the Decatur Barbecue, the Tontitown Grape Festival, and Riverfest. She will also be opening for Bryan White at the Decatur Barbecue on August 1.

Admission is by donation only, and the concert will begin at 8 p. m. Jack Reeves will begin his performance at 8: 30 p. m.
