DECATUR ó A ì Fun in the Park ñ Save our School Fundraiserî is planned for July 19 to help raise the money needed to keep Decatur schools open.

T-shirts, designed especially for the fundraiser, with the phrase ì Schools out for summer, but not forever ! î say it all. The community is committed to keeping its schools open.

The fundraiser will be held in Veteranís park and will begin at 2 p. m. with games for all ages, including a beanbag toss, duck pond, three-legged race, water-balloon toss and tug-of-war, as well as face painting.

A silent auction will also start at 2 p. m. A long list of items have been donated, including a HP Pavilion lap top, a portable DVD player, a yard machine rototiller, skate boards, leapfrog toys and many other items.

There will also be items for sale, including cake mixes, Leviís, sunglasses, garden tools and more. A home-made quilt and wall quilt will be raffled off at the event.

The Bryson family, which has two Decatur students, donated a whole hog ó butchered, processed and freezer ready ó to be raffled. Tickets will be sold at the fundraiser, and a drawing will be held at the first home football game.

Raffle tickets for an excel 2800 PSI pressure washer, with a Honda engine cat pump, will also be sold and the drawing will be held at the second home football game.

Concessions, such as nachos, icecream, watermelon and soft drinks will be sold throughout the day, and a chili supper will begin at 5 p. m. It will include not only chili, chili dogs and Frito pie, but also hot dogs, tacos, nachos, chips and homemade desserts.

At 6 p. m. the silent auction winners will be announced and a pie and cake auction will begin. Students, grade eight and above have also donated their labor for a hired-hand auction. They will perform any type of work, from painting and mowing, to doing dishes and laundry.

There will be live entertainment all afternoon, and the weekly acoustic jam will begin at 7 p. m., followed by a benefit concert featuring country music singer Jack Reeves and Kyla Horton at 8 p. m.

Should the schools close, the money raised at the event will be used to benefit the community, according to Royce Johnson. Some possible uses could be improvements to the city parks or for Decatur Youth Sports, he said. While donations to the Decatur Education Foundation can be refunded, it will be impossible to refund money to everyone who buys a hot-dog or raffle ticket, Johnson explained.
