Half a point puts Cooper Cup in Team Brittany’s hands

Bad weather may have slowed play of the fifth annual 2008 Cooper Cup golf tournament on Wednesday, May 7, but the seven teams competing persevered through soggy fairways at the Country Club Golf Course on Friday.
Team Brittany took home the top prize with 11 points - just edging out Team Dogwood's 10. 5 points - despite Wednesday's play at the Highlands Golf Course being canceled because of heavy rain.
"Any win is a good win, especially for amateurs like us. We really had to come on Friday to pull out the win," said Chuck Fletcher, co-captain of Team Brittany.
Team Dogwood started with an early lead after Monday's play at the Berksdale Golf Course with four wins, no losses and two ties for five points. Defending champs Team Kingswood followed closely with four points by way of four wins and two losses, while Team Brittany finished the first day of play with two wins, one loss and three ties for 3. 5 points.
This year's champs finished strong on Friday with six wins, three losses and three ties for 7. 5 points, slipping past Team Dogwood, which had four wins, five losses and three ties for 5. 5 points.
Each win counts as one point in the Cooper Cup tournament, with no points for losses and a half point awarded for ties.
The golf tournament consisted of two-man modified alternate shots on Monday and individual match play on Friday. Wednesday's play was scheduled to be a two-man best ball competition.
Teams were disappointed that Wednesday's play was canceled, but the Highlands Golf Course was still in excellent shape even with the wet conditions, Fletcher said.
Joining Fletcher on Team Brittany were co-captain Bobby Swain, Larry Mc-Daniel, Mike Summrall, Bob Etien, Albert Woodell, John Muldoon, Jim Marshall, Larry Hoogerhyde, Glenn Hitchcock, David Mazzone and James Gardner.
The Cooper Cup is the spring edition of the annual Village Cup held each fall. Qualifications are the same for both events. Each player must be a Property Owners Association member with a handicap of 14 or below and be at least 55 years of ages, according to Mel Briley, event coordinator.
