ROGERS - The aroma leads many people straight to First and Poplar streets. That's where they find a barbecue pit lined with Whitey's Frisco Chicken sizzling over the coals.

The chicken, and the volunteers who cook it and sell it, play a big roll in the success of Frisco Festival, which is set for Aug. 22 and 23 in historic downtown Rogers.

"The festival would not be the same without the chicken," acknowledged Marge Wolf, president of Main Street Rogers, the sponsoring organization. "We are always grateful to the folks from Regions Bank who not only sponsor Frisco Chicken, the bank's employees spend the entire festival selling it."

Festival organizers plan on selling 1, 800 chicken halves this year for $ 3 a half or two for $ 5. Proceeds benefit the festival. The chicken, provided by Tyson Foods, will be available near the barbecue pit in Frisco Park on First Street.

Chicken isn't the only food available, festival coordinator Sara Mason noted.

An old-time ice-cream social will be held Friday and Saturday at First and Walnut streets. The event is sponsored by Good Humor-Breyers and hosted by the Main Street Rogers Business Committee.

For those who prefer fried catfish and hushpuppies, the Rogers Rotary Catfish Fry is the place to be Friday starting at 5 p.m. at Second and Elm streets. Cost is $ 6 for adults and $ 4 for children.

Early birds on Saturday can stop by Second and Elm streets for the Early Risers Rotary pancake breakfast. Cost is $ 6 per person.

Sandwiches, homemade pie and air conditioning are the highlights of the Fill-RUp Cafe in the fellowship hall at the First United Methodist Church on Third and Elm streets. Restrooms are available.

Concessions will be available in the food court near the main stage at First and Elm streets.

Fresh food is on the menu at the Rogers Farmers' Market, which will move for the day to the corner of Arkansas and Walnut streets.

There will be plenty of entertainment to enjoy while chowing down on Frisco food. The festival kicks off Friday with the traditional street dance. Ultra Suede and Joe Giles and the Homewreckers will perform at 7 p.m. and 9 p. m., respectively, on the main stage.

Saturday is full of diverse entertainment on the main stage.

The festival concludes Saturday with a second street dance at 6 p.m.
