The Bella Vista Computer Club has received several questions from computer users in the area. Club members hope you will find the answers to these questions helpful.
Q: After installing Microsoft Office 2003, Outlook has taken over as my e-mail program. I prefer Outlook Express. How can I set Outlook Express as my default e-mail program ?
A: Open Internet Explorer. Click on Tools and select Internet Options. Click on the Programs Tab. Next to E-mail, click the down-pointing arrow and select Outlook Express as your default e-mail program.
Q: How do I print a screen from an Internet Explorer Web site ?
A: On the menu bar, click File and select Print, then click the Print button.
If you only want to print a portion of the Web page, use the mouse to highlight the portion you want to print. Click File and select Print. In the Page Range section of the Print dialog box, choose Selection. When you click the Print button, the computer will print just the portion of the page you highlighted.
Q: Do the number of Cox Cable Internet subscribers in a neighborhood slow down the service ?
A: It's possible if everyone is sharing the same available bandwidth.
Cox has different tiers of Internet speed. You may be on a lower speed tier.
Of course, the higher speed tiers cost more.
Q: I installed Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2007. It uninstalled AVG, and everything seems to be slower. Why ?
A: The Internet security suite you installed is more than just an antivirus program. In includes other security programs that protect your computer. The additional programs cause your computer to run slower. You could install more computer memory to help offset this problem. Otherwise, you could uninstall the suite and install individual free programs, such as AVG, Ad-Aware, Spybot and Zone Alarm, to name a few.
Q: I was on DSL but have discontinued that and gone back to dial-up.
I still have the modem connected to my downstairs computer.
When on the Internet on that computer, I don't tie up the phone line. When on the computer upstairs, the phone line is tied up. Why ?
A: Your DSL line is still active and allowing you to connect to the Internet without tying up the phone line. Q: I've recently downloaded Internet Explorer 7. How do I insure this will be my default browser and e-mail client ? A: Open Internet Explorer. Click on Tools and select Internet Options. Click on the Programs Tab. Here you can verify that Outlook Express is the default e-mail program and Internet Explorer is the default Web browser.
