ASGA Match Play Championship begins today in Pine Bluff

BENTON COUNTY — Two golfers from Benton County will begin play today at the 42 nd annual Arkansas State Golf Association Match Play Championship at Harbor Oaks Country Club in Pine Bluff.
Michael Chaney of Bentonville and Eric Gibbs of Bella Vista are two of the 64 players playing in the 18-hole qualifying round. With 63 spots available (defending champion Ron Mangold of Pocahontas is exempt from qualifying and automatically seeded No. 1 ), the qualifying round will eliminate only one player but will determine the order of seeding.
After the field of 64 is set there will be two matches played Friday and Saturday. The semifinals will be Sunday morning and the championship match will begin at approximately 12: 30 p. m.
Nine of the top 11 in the current ASGA Player of the Year standings have entered the championship, led by leader Wes McNulty.
McNulty, a Pine Bluff farmer, is a three-time ASGA Match Play Champion (1993, 2005 and 2006 ) and also won the ASGA Designated Tournament at Harbor Oaks in April.
Harbor Oaks will play 7, 000 yards to a par of 72.
