UA coach: Fortson will be something special

I know we’re in the middle of football season, and plenty of the Razorbacks-related chatter is focused on the Hogs’ 25-22 win over Auburn and hope of a seasonal resurgence, but I’ve got to mention that basketball season is just around the corner.

In fact, Arkansas’ basketball media day is Monday afternoon. Coach John Pelphrey and his band of new Razorbacks will meet with the press for the first time this semester. It’s our first look at heralded freshmen Rotnei Clarke, Brandon Moore, Montrell McDonald, Jason Henry and Courtney Fortson.

FortsonAnd, according to ESPN’s Andy Katz, UA assistant Rob Evans believes Fortson is going to be something special.

Here’s more from Katz:

“He will be a pro, not a one-and-done, but maybe two or three years down the road,” Evans said.

Evans cited a strong performance that Fortson had against Brandon Jennings, who is off playing in Rome instead of Arizona this season. Evans loves Fortson’s quickness, handle and overall ability to play the position. Arkansas isn’t likely going to the NCAAs this season and could finish last in the SEC West. But apparently Fortson is one to check on throughout the season.

As we all know, Arkansas has been missing a reliable point guard for several seasons. Maybe Fortson is that answer Hog fans have been looking for.

I’ll have more late Monday afternoon from media day.
