Mitchell has knee surgery, timetable for return unknown

Arkansas defensive tackle Ernest Mitchell had arthroscopic knee surgery on his left knee this afternoon.

MitchellMitchell, according to UA sports information, injured his knee during the Hogs’ 52-10 loss to Texas on Saturday. Details of the injury, the details of the surgery and a timetable for Mitchell’s possible return were, as you would expect, left to the imagination.

β€œAt this time, it is uncertain how long he will be sidelined,” Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino said in a statement released by the UA. “We are still hopeful that he could return at some point this season. I know that Ernest will work hard to rehabilitate his injury with our training staff in an effort to get back on the field with his teammates.”

Mitchell had arthroscopic knee surgery in January, and swelling had been a problem for the lineman. He was limited in the preseason and Mitchell felt he was “90 percent” healthy with the knee on Aug. 27.

Considering the long recovery time of the last surgery to now, the Hogs will be lucky to get Mitchell, a starter at DT, back by the end of the season. But that’s just a guess. We’ll give you word if anything official comes out into the open.
