Are you kidding me?
My buddies and I just got back from the Gator/Rebels game. All I can ask is why exactly did we get rid of Nutt? How in the world was I convinced to invest money to get rid of him? I should have expected it. The Rebels reminded me of the old Razorbacks that never cared if they were overmanned, under skilled or had much less talent. They just beat a top five team on the road. Hell, it reminded me of LSU last year at Baton Rouge. Maybe that was because the same coach was at that game as well.
Go ahead and hate. I am sure that Coach Petrino will fare much better next week at home.
Last week against Vandy, Nutt looked like the Nutt I saw coaching against Vandy in Fayetteville in ‘05 when he gave the ball to Darren McFadden and Felix Jones a total of 1 time. If you dont remember, he lost both of those games to the powerful Commodores.
I promised a 52-10 score. Right now its 45-3. I am sure that Texas will cover the 52 but can someone help the Hogs score a touchdown! I need a touchdown!
So I guess the decision that we have to make is this: Do we want a team that is good for 8 wins and a decent bowl win every year, while occaisionally pulling an upset over a national power? Or do we want a team that gets manhandled like a rag doll against Alabama (49-14) and Texas (currently 45-3)? Even UTEP played Texas this close. Listen, you can talk “rebuilding” and “recruiting” all you want, but the simple fact of the matter is that as an SEC team, we should be able to be competitive. You can even say that this is a multi-year process…fine, so can we wait to pay our new “fearless leader” 2.85 million dollars when we see results, because all I have seen are two miracle comeback wins against bottom of the barrel programs and two drubbings at the hands of REAL teams.
The facts are that we as Razorback fans cannot appreciate a good thing when we have it. Irony can be a cruel thing. We ran our old coach (I wanted him out of town, too) out of town because he was not innovative enough. Now, the offense that he championed (even though he did not create it) is being duplicated to the highest level of football. The same offense was a major reason that Ole Miss defeated #4 Florida on their own field today. Programs across the nation are implementing it. How is that for innovation? However, we cannot see that…all we want is to pass the ball more. Now, we are passing it, and the results are painfully bad. Again, they may get better, but can we withhold the $2.85 million check until then?
Regardless of what happens two years from now, no one can deny that our former coach’s team was winless in the SEC last year; this year they defeated the #4 team at home. It’s funny how we attribute the former coach’s recruiting to his success. If that were the case, you would have thought that Ogeron could have won at least ONE game. The team he left struggled to beat glorified high school teams, and may not win another game this year. Again, it’s funny how we like to blame recruiting on the same guy.
Finally, it is not the losing that bothers me. It is the fact that while losing, we are making the same boneheaded decisions that we thought we were getting rid of when we ran HDN out of town. Furthermore, we do not look like we belong on the same field as the teams we are playing. With that said, how many recruits are going to be scared away from a program that looks like it couldn’t even beat the opposing team’s marching band? I can assure you, they will not come because our uniforms look cool.
Karma is cruel, and we deserve a season like this for our petulence and everything that Gatorjag has said has been right on, and he didn’t even pay me to say that.
Cowboy,
I do appreciate your post and could not agree with you more. This program is a strong program with a winning tradition. I just saw the Gators loose to a team they had no reason to loose to. They are a much more talented team. They have superior talent, facilities and even coaches but Ole Miss had so much more heart today and say what you will but it starts at the head coach.
As for your comments on the Wild Hog, did you see what Miami did to New England last Sunday? Great point Cowboy.
Walking off the field loosing to a superior team carries no shame, but like you said beating UCA and UAPB on last second scores carriies no pride. We should expect more than the ragdoll wippings.
You also are corerect about the recruits. They wont come or stay because we have cool uniforms.
Welcome to the state of reality Cowboy. Stay in touch. I will be at the Florida game next week.
GOD BLESS THE DEFENSE! 52-10!
Gaterjag,
You truly are dumber than a box of rocks. PHD status elevates you to the level of an intellectual derelict with no sense to come in out of the pouring rain.
The Gators had EVERY reason to lose to Ole Miss. Ed Orgeron was an assistant under Pete Carroll at USC prior to coming to Oxford. Those Rebels are HIS players. Obviously, you need a history lesson.
In 1998, Houston Nutt started his first season at Arkansas 8-0 with DANNY FORD’S players. He’s in the same situation now at Ole Miss with ED ORGERON’s players. Ed recruited guys like Reggie Bush and Matt Leinhart and beat the crap out of Houston’s Hogs in the meeting of USC and UA in Los Angeles. Do you need a further history lesson on the score of that game? I can provide it for you if your superior intellect nose is shoved so far up in the clouds that you can’t even smell your own poop.
Give it a couple of seasons. Your saint, HDN, will have the Rebs in the same mid-major mediocrity that he had the Hogs in.
Meanwhile, slowly but surely, Petrino will build a winning program at Arkansas from the ashes your beloved saint left it in. His freshman now will not have the memory disability that you possess. They will remember the drubbings like today. And, as they say, “Revenge will be a dish best served cold.”
Enjoy for now, gatorjag. You’ll be no where to be found along with everybody else who is a naysayer, a season or two from now. Hang your sheepskin somewhere else, preferrably on Ole Miss blogs, while the rest of us true Hog fans continue to show determination and support for the new regime at Arkansas.
Your doomsday comments have no purpose on this site. You are not an Arkansas Razorback fan. Do us all and yourself a favor…leave.
Spacecadet98,
I also love reading your shortcomings. Judging by the performance of Houston’s last three recruiting classes at UA, I wonder who’s really reaping what they sow?
And to think he dangled the Nebraska and LSU jobs in our face at the same time. Good riddance. I’d rather see a program humilated on the field for the moment than see one continue in mid-major mediocrity with a souless individual that lacks all intergrity at the helm.
I say don’t give up Coach Petrino. You’ll have the last laugh on these clowns.
JagNutt,
You are hysterical man. Kudos to HDN, but similar to 1998, he inherited a team [much more talented than the one he left].
Regardless, dude, take your poison elsewhere. Hehe.. I am sure that Oxford has plenty of trailer parks for your double wide.
Uh Cowboy newsflash for you… What’s his Nutts did not “innovate” that offense you are talking about. He was the one that got rid of the coach that started that offense. The only reason UF lost is because they gave Ole Miss the ball on TOs. UF got cocky just like USC and thought they were invincible.
The passing game only works when you don’t have a stupid bonehead QB that doesn’t know which receiver is on his team or that he can’t hold onto the ball. Remember we had a good QB who could pass and he was 8-0, but we lost him because of what’s his Nutts so he wasn’t that great and I don’t think we miss him. If we are to win we need to invest in recruiting a smart and tough QB ( I.e. not a Dick) and make recruiting good defensive players ( who are not future criminals or can’t add 2 plus 2).
Afrazrback,
You’re EXACTLY right. HDN innovated NOTHING. Pop Warner is the genius behind the Single Wing Option begun in 1907.
1907, gatorjag. Neither you nor your beloved saint were around then. Another history lesson is taught to the intellectual derelict.
As with Nolan Richardson, give Petrino some time. The Razorbacks will rise, again. In two to three years, they will be playing BCS ball. Next year will be a vast improvement.
Arkansas 38, Texas 10
2010 Cotton Bowl.
dwp,
I wish your optimism extended to the Arkansas Sports Press. As he did after leaving the Atlanta Falcons, I hope Bobby Petrino ignores the Arkansas Gazette on Sunday, especially Little Wally.
This program can and will succeed as long as people are PATIENT. Programs like Alabama and Missouri suffered miserably for more than just ONE season under expectations that were WAY TOO HIGH. These teams have only recently seen promise because people in their respective administrations, athletic departments, alumni and overall fan base finally had the common sense to back up and give coaching staffs room to improve the situation.
The Razorback Nation needs to take this course of action as well.
Let’s be fair to HDN. He did inherit Danny Ford’s players, but Danny had just gone 4-7 for two years in a row with those players. And Orgeron had what, 4 or 5 years with his players and still couldn’t produce a winning season? If Petrino were winning all of his games with Nutt’s players, you’d be saying that the coach was making all the difference. While it may be true that we would always be an 8-win team with HDN, you have to give the man credit for building a team that was mostly competitive in the SEC. We were a glorified high school team against SEC competition when we first came into the league, but we were not a pushover when HDN left. And you can’t say someone who expresses an opinion opposite to yours isn’t a true fan. People who criticized Nutt last year considered themselves true fans, so why can’t people who criticize Petrino be true fans? I wanted Nutt to succeed because he was a Razorback, born and bred, and I think that’s most likely the only kind of coach we will get to stay here for an extended period of time. Now I want Petrino to succeed because I want to see my Hogs win championships. Again, I think the biggest mistake Nutt made was letting his ego get the better of him with Malzahn. Nutt is a good coach; Petrino is a good coach. Petrino’s Hogs will get better, but I’m surprised at how bad our defense is this year. This is the worst defense I can ever remember us fielding, and I just don’t think the defense should be this bad, new coaching staff or not.
I hear you, UA87. We all need to be patient. The sun will come up tomorrow and the Razorbacks will rise, again - and, under Petrino, it will be sooner than later.
Hehe.. though it will likely require years of therapy from a real doc, JagNutt and SpaceCadet98 need to simply move on.
GO HOGS!
Well, then a pop warner team just beat the #4 team in the nation, and a pop warner team beat the tar out the New England Patriots on Sunday. You can talk about turnovers and Florida “giving away the game,” but the fact of the matter is that the final score was Ole Miss 31, UF 30. I’m sure Urban Meyer was just looking ahead to UF’s game to UA this week, since we have shown ourselves to be juggernauts.
And you can talk about the future all you want, but that does not excuse the pitiful performance and lack of preparation from our coaching staff. Again, it’s funny how you all take credit away from Nutt because road the coattails of another coach’s recruits…What you are really doing is acknowledging that he is a good coach. In Danny Ford’s last year, he went 4-7. With almost the same players, Nutt went 9-3. It seems that coaching made the difference. Same thing with Ole Miss…If Ogeron could not get his so-called talented roster to perform, then what does that say about the coaching done this year. There’s a flipside to this coin. You want to talk about how he could not recruit players. If memory serves, we had multiple picks in this year’s draft. Somebody had to bring those players in. It’s also funny how in 10 seasons, we only had two losing ones, and even those seasons, we were competitive in some games. This year, we haven’t belonged on the field with the opposing team’s cheerleaders, much less their football team, and most of it is due to coaching.
If you notice, I gave no credit to Nutt for creating the offense or for reimplementing it (why don’t you actually read the post), but he smartly uses his personell to give the defense a different look. You can call that stealing if you want, but a win is a win. Like it or not, this offense has had influence all the way to the NFL. These are the facts. Try disputing them.
Afrazrback, real classy attacking the recruits who CHOSE to come here not realizing that its fans would use FOIA just because they didn’t like the coach. How naive of you to believe that arrests and less than stellar academic performance are part of college football–in all programs. But programs continue to recruit these players because of multi-million dollar contracts and unrealistic expectations from fans (cough! cough!), you know, the kind of fans who run their coach out after 10 and 8 win seasons. And that is what you want…You want to win a national championship every year, don’t you? At any price? Including $2.85 million? Do you think that Petrino is going to recruit choir boys who know how to enrich uranium? Let’s not pretend that our new coach is the Pope–his record speaks for itself.
With all that said, I hope Petrino can turn it around, but who knows how long he will be here. I love how ua87 wants to criticize Nutt for his lack of ethics. Meanwhile, we hired a guy who left his football team with three weeks in the season, who dangled the Auburn job over Louisville, and who ditched Louisville to work in the NFL. Say what you will about Nutt’s flirtations, but he didn’t leave until we ran him out. But this isn’t about ethics or morality–it is about winning football games and fielding a competitive team, right?
Maybe we will be better, and I hope we can be next year’s Alabama. But let’s call it like it is: We stink and the past two losses are inexcusable, and the coaching staff is to blame. The honeymoon is over, and since the coach is making nearly 3 million, I expect improvement next week against Florida.
I also love how dwp and ua87 have no evidence to support their “let’s hope for a great future” defense, so they just make up cute little nicknames for people who are willing to actually–oh no–criticize the coaching staff. In retort, I will give my nicknames for you two: dumb and dumber–I’ll let you argue over which is which.
Cowboy,
I am agreeing with you for the most part..
Yes we did have winning seasons, but how many bowls did we win in those 10? 1 or 2 wins? How many division championship games did we win? 0 and both we looked pathetic where we proved we didn’t deserve to be there. Yes I give the Nutt credit for recruiting some great talent, but then if the coach couldn’t even be competitive during your ten year reign, that says something about the coaching.
I agree the current players are playing like junior varsity because they have no heart, discipline, teamwork, or no leadership. I have no problem losing because it is a rebuilding , but I expect more competitiveness from a veteran SEC QB, O Line, and D Line. I don’t want a championship every year, I want UA to play like a team that will fight and will never let teams romp 50 points on us or almost losing to a Div II school. Also I am tired of escusing every year as a rebuilding year. Name me one MEANINGFUL game UA has won in the last ten years other than the 2000 Cotton Bowl. Yes we won a couple of rivalry games once in awhile, but it didn’t get us anywhere hence my point.
I am making the point about academics because I am tired of finding talented recruits come in academically ineligible or they come in and get kicked off for criminal activities. It wastes everyones time and UA is not elite enough in the SEC to overcome that ( hence every year is a rebuilding year)
Cheers
This is not meant to be a complete defense of Nutt, but in his 10 years, we won or shared 3 SEC West titles. Yes, we got whipped in the SEC Championship game in 2002, but we played much better in 2006. We fell behind by a lot early, but I believe we came back to at least a tie with Florida before losing by 10 points. We also got whipped in ‘95, but that was under Danny Ford. There were 7 meaningful SEC victories in 2006, and there is only one way to have a better SEC record than that. We shouldn’t have lost to LSU in 2006, and that still makes me sick. Nutt’s bowl record isn’t much different than any other Hog coach; we have a losing record overall in bowl games for some reason. I believe Nutt is the only UA coach to have a winning record against Texas. With all of that being said, I believe we can be better under Petrino, but we still shouldn’t be losing this badly this year. Our defense looks completely lost on nearly every down. A victory for our defense is when our opponent has to kick a field goal, and that’s pitiful. Improvement on the defensive side of the ball shouldn’t be that hard to accomplish this season. If we don’t make any improvement there, I think it’s completely fair to blame the coaching staff. I also remember reading a few comments before this season began that said Casey Dick would set all kinds of school records this year, and that the offense would be a record-breaking one. Well, I think it’s safe to say that those ideas were overly optimistic.
afrazrback, fair enough. It does seem like we agree on more than we disagree. My point is that we have to be careful what we wish for sometimes. I agree that we could have done more under HDN, and as I mentioned earlier, I was among those who did not want him here by the end of last year (it just seemed like we needed a change). But the way our fanbase ran him off was inexcusable. And I don’t think we should just blindly accept our new coach when his team has not given any reason to do so.
I worry about the coaching credentials of our current head coach. Yes, he had success, at Louisville, a team that was in Conference USA for one his head coaching years. The BCS game he won was against Wake Forest. As I recall, many on these very boards were whining when we thought we were going hire Jim Grobe, Wake Forest’s coach because he coached in the ACC, oh, and he didn’t pass enough. Do you see the double standard there?
I KNOW that the D-coordinator is no good. I am a 49er fan (I know, it’s rough), and he was their DC in 2003 (or ‘04), the year they went 1-15, and were about as effective as a cheesecloth on defense (look it up, you will be frightened). When his hiring was announced, a cold shiver went up my spine.
I have faint hope for the offense because we did at least move the ball on Alabama (And apparently, they are MUCH better than anyone thought). However, today’s game was pretty pathetic. Maybe we will be better once Mallet gets in there next year, but he will not fair much better if the Oline cannot protect. The receivers look OK. It worries me that they could not get separation today from an equally inexperienced Texas secondary.
It’s going to be a long year, but I can only hope that it will pay dividends in the next few seasons. Ultimately, however, this coaching staff is going to have to give us a reason to hope, and 52-10 is not going to get it done.
Spacecowboy,
I finally read something we can agree on. The verdict is yet to be read on Willy Robinson. I live in St. Louis and watched the Rams swiss cheese defense last year.
However, I have to think Willy is a victim of circumstance on both fields. In St. Louis, he was given very little lattitude by Linehan. Ownership is no longer interested in putting forth the effort with current talent in the NFL nor on draft day to make the Rams competitive. Also, don’t you believe that Petrino was in a certain perdicament when the other Robinson bolted for South Carolina? I mean, here he was without a DC just DAYS before the end of signing period last spring. Petrino had to act fast to fill the post. Time will tell if the selection made was a good one.
If you watched the Texas/Ark game yesterday when Texas was on offense, you could not help but see the size differential in Texas offense versus Arkansas defensive players. We really struggle at the Linebacker position in skill level. Likewise is the case in the Secondary. No staff is going to come in on a white horse in less than a year to change that. And lets face it, HDN’s recruiting practices at UA were reactionary at best. He never planned ahead when skill players were close to graduating or leaving for the NFL. And for that matter, I don’t think he or his staff knew the definition of “Frequent Flyer Miles” when it came to recruiting trips either.
Are the current coaches preparing the team properly? From what I can see and what they have to work with right now, I’m not sure that’s a fair question to even ask.
Again, PATIENCE MUST rule the day.
Well Cowboy,
It seems clear and evident that we are not only under the skin of ua87 and dwp, but we are in their heads as well. As a Psychiatrist, I can see right through them and feel sorry for them. They have this internal embarrassment, and the truth we have shared has reduced them to their simplest form, name callers. That’s all they have.
By the way dwp, when given all the options to express happiness, joy, or laughter and you purposely choose to use a small case h, small case e, followed by another small case h and e. Do you mean to be that transparent? I realize we have reduced you to a mute point name caller, but mat I suggest you at least try to keep us guessing?
Cowboy, I want to thank you for your posts. Wyohog, you are on track as well. Cowboy, you are right on the mark. I trust that you have read some of my posts and know my story. I was convinced like you last year to invest in a plan to bring Arkansas to the next level. I was convinced, against my better judgment. I contributed a large sum and my return on investment is ridiculous. I need a bailout! You are right when you call this effort less than acceptable. It’s embarrassing and you also are right when you say Karma is a witch with a B. We are getting exactly what we handed out. I never was 100% against the “its time for a fresh start” thought. I just agree with you that it was the way that it was handled that is coming back to haunt us now. We deserve this and I hate that I was part of the group.
Please continue to post the truth. As for this season, surely it will get better right? Florida should be in a real sour mood next week. I will see if I can make it three in a row next week.
I wonder cowboy i dwp and ua87 were preaching patience last year when Patrino came on board? I wonder if they were posting the three to four year plan to a BCS game last year? They preach patience now, they preached Championships last year. Just how long wil “the kids wil grow up” last this year?
Anyway, see you guys next weekend.
Gatorjag,
Your words from post 3 of this chain, “I am sure that Texas will cover the 52 but can someone help the Hogs score a touchdown! I need a touchdown!” Those are your words.
Lets “ANALyze” you and your words. It doesn’t take a “shrink” to understand the tone and intent of these words. They might as well have been from an arrogant Longhorn fan. Worse yet, they speak of selfishness and a total lack of compassion and loyalty for the Hogs. All you cared about this weekend was covering your spread and attempting to show dwp and I how stupid we are for our loyalty and dedication to the Hogs. You threw the first punch. We just sought to finish it.
As I said before, you’re not a Razorback fan. A Razorback fan does not kick his team when they are down. I have no doubt that you will bask in your pomposity when Florida comes calling next Saturday. And unfortunately, we’ll all be subject to more words from an intellectual derelict. This is also not name calling. It is an accurate description for someone so full of themselves and so immature that they find pleasure in someone else’s suffering, squarely and directly the Hogs suffering.
There is no “Karma” But, there is value in the saying, “What goes around, comes around.” We’re not getting what we supposedly deserve after HDN’s departure like you would lead us to believe. We’re simply having to put up with the crap coming out of the mouths of people like you until Petrino turns it around. And, it will be fun when it happens because I will not lower myself to your level with a “See, I told you so” attitude. I’ll simply be proud of the fact that the program will be in the right direction and things like you and this season will be in the past.
ua87,
No doubt a hire had to be made, and Robinson was there. I just do not think that he his guy based on his experience as DC at SF (seriously, look up the stats on that defense). The guy just did not seem to have a clue (much like now). Now, you are accurate about the caliber of our defensive players. That may be why Herring ran that blitzing style of defense. It’s tough when your defense cannot do ANYTHING well. We can’t rush the passer, we can’t stop the run, we can’t cover receivers. The only way to cover that stink is to send seven guys and hope it works a time or two.
But it seems we still have a lack of defensive depth and talent appropriate to our new scheme, and now we have a sorry DC. I think Wyohog said it best: when you consider giving up a field goal a defensive victory, then you have some serious issues.
I agree with you somewhat that patience is important, but I have to have something to hold on to. Look at Michigan. They are very much in a similar position, and they have endured some embarrassing losses, but you can see reasons for hope with them. And they defeated Wisconsin yesterday. Now, they are Michigan, but we are not chopped liver, and these past two games are inexcusable, and I think it is fair to look at the coaching staff. One only has to look at the Alabama-Georgia game last night. Alabama had another stellar start, jumping out to a 31-point lead, but Georgia continued to fight. When Alabama smacked us in the mouth, we demured like a whipped dog. As for Texas, we just didn’t look prepared in any phase of the game. We have had to burn numerous timeouts because of formation mistakes in all four games, the coaching staff sent in a 12th player on a goaline stand against WIU. These are things that a coaching staff should handle, regardless of the players’ talent level. Again, I hope it will get better and I will be the first to cheer when I see something to cheer about. Until then, the honeymoon is long over for me. I need to results; not wins, necessarily, but results.
JagNutt,
Hehe.. many thanks, but I am going to pass on your analysis. In my opinion, you’re a self promoting blow hard and a fraud, man. Analyze that.
Go Hogs!
Dwp,
What can I say? You’re a self fulfilling prophecy! You have been broken down to the least common denominator…a name caller.
I will continue to take the high road and comment on the Hogs and their season. I challenge you to do the same.
I could not help myself, JagNutt. Your self promoting nonsense is totally uncalled for. It also lends itself to someone who seems to be very insecure. I can assure you that many of us on this site are every bit as successful as you claim to be and support the Razorbacks [financially] every bit as much as you claim to do. You do not have some sort of monopoly on either of these items.
I am just as frustrated with the team right now as everyone else, including you, but the key to this program’s success is patience.
Bobby Petrino is an excellent coach and his past easily speaks for itself. In time, he will have the Razorbacks near the top and playing BCS ball. In the meantime, the type of “fan” related poison that you seem so intent on spreading is ridiculous.
Kudos to Houston Nutt with their win at Florida. However, Nutt inherited a much better team than the one he left in Fayetteville. Combine an off year in talent with a completely new offensive and defensive scheme, and every team in the country would be having some serious growing pains. Nolan Richardson’s first Razorback team was something like 12 wins and 16 losses. You know the rest of the story, once Richardson recruited his own players.
It may not happen this year, but the football program will rise again, JagNutt - with or without you.
There is no great mystery to the Razorback’s problems…
They have no on-the-field leaders, no heart that pumps the team up. Houston Nutt was the game day heart, the rah rah guy that got the team going every Saturday. There are no players that have taken that role on this team. Coach Petrino is not a rah rah guy, he is a play caller, an adapter, the brains of the system, calm and cool. Coach Nutt never really recruited big leaders or really developed leaders on the offensive side of the ball because that was his role, some young men developed this on there own, usually defensive players. There was no need for him to spend time creating that, Coach Nutt was born for that role. I loved him for it, he got me interested in Razorback football again.
Coach Petrino will recruit heart, or develop it within his players. That little something that is missing right now. These are coach Nutt’s players for the most part and they haven’t developed that game day fire within, they are used to the coach getting them stoked every Saturday.
It’s a matter of two different coaching styles and the players on hand. Not a dig on either, its just different and we’re witnessing the growing pains.
Now before anyone starts, we had plenty of guys on offense that had heart but they weren’t real vocal leaders, they usually lead by their play, and they were driven by Coach Nutt. He brought that out in offensive players, it’s a great thing, it’s what makes him successful.
Coach Petrino has different things to offer, and they are also great things and they will make the Arkansas Razorbacks successful.
The change is good, we get the chance to build a great rivalry with Ole Miss.
lrhogfan,
I like that take. I never really thought about it that way before. Only time will tell if you are right. I hope you are.
