Hogs worst in SEC?

Are the Razorbacks really the worst team so far this season in the Southeastern Conference? Well, with Arkansas’ 10-point deficit to a Division I-AA school in mind, ESPN.com’s Chris Low thinks that’s the case after the Hogs’ 28-24 win over Western Illinois in his latest power rankings.

No one talks about Pillow Fight Club. Here’s Low’s explanation of ranking Arkansas 12 out of 12 in the SEC after Week 1:

The bright spot was senior quarterback Casey Dick. He saved the Hogs from an embarrassing home defeat to Western Illinois, an FCS (I-AA) school in their opener. Bobby Petrino is playing a bunch of freshmen, and it looks like the Hogs are going to take their lumps this season.

Arkansas was 11th in Low’s preseason power rankings.

Mississippi State is now ranked No. 11 above the Hogs after losing to Louisiana Tech last week, 22-14. The Bulldogs were shut out in the second half in that game.

Tennessee, which lost to UCLA in overtime Monday, dropped from fifth to 10th in Low’s power rankings this week.

With all that in mind, could the Hogs move up if they beat the University of Louisiana at Monroe in Little Rock Saturday?

I’m thinking not. After all, this week’s game is ESPN’s “Pillow Fight of the Week.”

  1. ESPN is really giving it to the Hogs after hiring Petrino and this is going to continue for a long time to come, which is ironic because Bobby Knight left in the middle of the year and they welcomed him to the broadcast booth. It doesnt matter what they think anyways except for swaying heisman voting…

  2. We’re going to get better, but we didn’t do anything on Saturday to help ourselves in any so-called ranking. If we had lost, I suppose we would have been worthy of ranking 13th out of 12 teams.

  3. Time flies….and it’s a good thing. In 2 years ESPN will be singing praise songs about Petrino and his Hogs. Petrino will not fail. No way, No How. Our problem will be making sure no one can out bid us for his services.

  4. Frankly, I couln’t care less about ESPN and their yappity yap, soap box oriented, biased, talking heads. In time, with solid recruiting and coaching, Petrino and company will rule the SEC.

  5. ESPN has some of the finest play-by-play announcers, especially Ron Franklin. But, you almost have to either walk away from your TV or mute the sound when mush mouth Lou and know-it-all Mark May come on at half. The sportscenter gang and other writers aren’t much better.

Unless you’re a Texas, Michigan or USC fan, its best to ignore any of the written or verbal noise out of ESPN. I kind of think jdc4 will be right. But, I would put it at three years instead.

  6. [...] is looming on the schedule (the game is ESPN’s pillow fight of the week!) so we’ve got predictions (Razorbloggers & Slophouse) and previews (Hog Blog & [...]

  7. All I know is that Coach Peterino was supposed to be our answer to this. We have played in the SEC Championship game with lesser coaches. We spent a great amount of time, energy and money to fix the old problem. We fixed that.
When we introduced Petrino as our coach, we immediatley began to feel that NOW we had a REAL caoch who would win Championships. This team will not.
I watched Vandy beat SC Thursday night and wondered just how many SEC wins this team is destined to have. We are just used to better results.

  8. The Razorbacks biggest problem remains their unrealistic fans, who actually believe they will go to the SEC West Championship game this year. This is a young team and first-year coach taking over the program in a highly-competitive and talented conference. We’ll be very very lucky to win even one conference game on our schedule. The best is about over here for our early-season games. From now on it’s a learning experience–let’s hope for fans as well as players.
