Tuesday Notes: Hogs ‘disappointing’ in return to practice
Maybe it was the dreary weather outside Tuesday, or maybe the Razorbacks are tired after their hard fought, 28-24, win over Western Illinois Saturday. Whatever was causing players to be unfocused inside the Walker Pavilion today didn’t really sit well with UA offensive coordinator Paul Petrino.
“It was a little disappointing,” Petrino said. “We didn’t come out and execute as well as we needed to. A couple of guys weren’t into practice like they should have been. Some guys had great effort. But overall it needs to be a lot better. We better come out here with a lot more enthusiasm and focus (Wednesday).”
The players realized it, too.
“We didn’t execute real well today,” junior wide receiver Lucas Miller said, agreeing with his coach. “Obviously Coach (Bobby) Petrino is upset with us. We just have to come out tomorrow with a better effort and better focus and get things right.”
Tuesdays, Petrino said, are usually the Hogs’ toughest practices.
“I’m not sure if they understand that but they are going to understand,” Petrino asserted. “So they had better get used to it.”
A lot of the media’s focus today after practice was on true freshman Greg Childs, who caught six passes for 88 yards and one touchdown to lead the Razorbacks’ receiving corps in the season opener. The reasoning for the success, again, came from the practice field, Petrino said.
“The guys who make the plays in practice that week are usually the guys who are gonna make the plays in the game,” Petrino said. “And we keep a catch chart of every single practice, and he made all the plays Wednesday and Thursday in practice last week. It wasn’t surprising that he was the one who made them all in the game. He’s using the stuff that looks good in practice, and that’s what you’re going to call in the game. It wasn’t surprising. You’ve just got to keep building on it and keep getting better.”

Here’s your quotable from today. Junior receiver Lucas Miller, who lost a helmet and a shoe on two of his three catches Saturday, addressed the sock snag.
“That was definitely a first time for that,” the Greenwood native said. “It was a little different. I ended up with a nice little green sock at the end of the game. We were in a formation where we were moving the ball. I didn’t want to stop that at all. I looked at the official like, ‘Can I continue to play with one shoe on?’ He kind of looked at me like I was dumb. I threw it off to the sideline and kept playing a couple of plays and Coach got me a sub.”
