AUDIO: Petrino’s Sunday teleconference

Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino just ended his weekly Sunday teleconference. Audio can been found below, as well as a few notes to get you prepped before listening.

— Receiver London Crawford, who went down with headache-like symptoms after a hit against Western Illinois on Saturday night, went to the hospital briefly after being carted off the field in the fourth quarter. Crawford is fine. No firm  update on his condition, but Petrino is hoping to get him back this week if he can fight through his concussion.

— Junior Michael Smith, who served a one-game suspension for violating an NCAA rule involving the use of textbooks, will be back at practice this week and will get the start against Louisiana-Monroe in Little Rock on Saturday.

— Arkansas’ five sacks were a credit to miscommunication by the veteran offensive front, quarterback Casey Dick and the young running backs lining up on the wrong side in the backfield and missing protections, Petrino said.

— As for this week, Petrino thinks the Hogs could be in for another tight game with his young squad made up of 18 true freshmen. Louisiana-Monroe, as you may remember, beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala., last season.

“We’ll probably be in another battle to find a way to win the game,” Petrino said. “That’s the most important thing, to get the ‘W’ on the board.”

The experience Dick got from staying in throughout the Western Illinois game may help, though.

“It was a great experience for Casey to be in that and have to do it in the fourth quarter,” Petrino continued. “But because we didn’t take care of our business in the first half, Nathan Dick missed out on reps, and Mortensen. And the question of whether we were going to put Tyler Wilson in or not. … We talked about that all the way up to pre-game about what we would do. We still have that question to be answered too.”

  1. Ok folks,

ANALyze all you want. The telling words above are that our starting squad is made up of 18 true freshman, 18. If I’m counting my numbers right on both sides of the ball, that leaves 4 players with more than ONE year of experience, 4. Regardless of what happens the rest of the way this year, can you imagine how conditioned and sharp these players will be after this season??

The other coaches that Petrino and his staff face from here on know darn well and good that this is about the only chance they’ll have at getting a win against Arkansas. I say enjoy it while it lasts because it may well be their last chance.

  2. Here is my 2 cents on Saturday’s game. I am not looking to the past and I am not going to talk about past coaches except in a good light. The bottom line is we won the game. I believe the hard physical spring and fall practices gave us the will to find a way to win. Arkansas often times folded in the past. This is what it is going to take moving forward to play for a BCS championship. Fight to the end and until the last buzzer sounds. Never give up! The system that is in place now will need tweaks. It is a work in progress. We have played one game. The future recruits will be better in this new system. I have seen lower division teams get better and better each year. Hats off to WIU and a player I recently got to meet at the Melbourne, FL high school spring game (Taylor Rowan). There may be ugly wins and losses this season but we get better and better each game. You can’t expect an overnight transformation from these players in a new system. It takes time to develop the experience needed in our new style of play. You can only get so much experience playing each other in practice. The players on this team seem to get in trouble left and right. That doesn’t come from the coaches. I said in past posts that there was a discipline, accountability and focus problem at Arkansas. How many more players are going to have to stand before a judge or get suspended for games this year? That hurts the team and our image. We have to get the younger players ready this year and blend in next year’s players. Do that again 2 more times and everybody on the team then has been in the system long enough to execute with more precision.
Take LSU and Les Miles. Saban rebuilt that team after several years of good to average play and then left Miles in good shape for the future. Spurrier is building a program at South Carolina. Brooks has being doing the same at Kentucky. Crooms is doing it at Mississippi State. One game or one season is not enough razorback football under this new staff for me to start bashing them. We have had good teams in the past but not great like the kind of teams that win championships. It takes time with a new staff to prove themselves and get things in place. How would you like to be evaluated on your job at a new company? It takes time to rebuild and put into place the players that are students of the game. We took some baby steps Saturday. By the end of this season we will ride our first bicycle and two seasons later we will be ready to play with the big boys in the SEC. Always remember the SEC is the best conference in college football. You don’t show up with a new system no matter how good and win instantly with insane stats.

  3. we dont have 18 freshman starting…we just have 18 freshman on the squad. But i agree that we are gonna be sooo good soon!!!

  4. The kids will grow up. They will realize how good they are. These things take time.

And guys, please… lets get off the HDN issue. Love or hate the dude, regardless, he is past tense. Go Hogs!

  5. Thanks for the correction, gotahogtat. Still, we’ve got a lot of inexperience out there on the field combined with a most unfriendly schedule. That’s a lot of words of wisdom coming out of allentex too. Dwp, I could not agree with you more. HDN is the past. Guess I let gatorjag ruffle my feathers a little.

My pledge to all is to keep the focus on Petrino his staff and players present and future. Want to revisit the past? Read a media guide. Its full of it.
