Tuesday Practice Notes: Let’s get offensive

It was an offensive day for the Razorbacks at practice Tuesday. Well, that’s how it works under the new coaching staff here in Fayetteville. Tuesdays are the media’s day to chat with offensive coaches and players.

The focus today in interview sessions? How good is Arkansas’ new offense?

Oh, and don’t call it the Power Spread, or a Spread offense of any kind for that matter, offensive coordinator Paul Petrino says.

“Not even close to accurate, really,” Petrino said.

So what is the Arkansas offense?

“It’s a mixture of two-back, one-back, multiple offense. I don’t know exactly how to define it,” Petrino explained. “But it’s definitely not the Spread”

What the offense is about is attacking, Petrino’s players said.

“I think it’s about coming out and attacking,” UA sophomore tight end D.J. Williams said. “I haven’t seen any signs of them so far laying back in any situation. It’s always attack, be aggressive, be tough.

“It’s going to be an exciting offense to watch.”

And why is that? Well, it’s because Bobby Petrino’s offense almost always gets someone open on the field, Williams said.

“Sometimes we’ll even think to ourselves,’Wow, how did that guy get so wide open?’” Williams said. “But that’s why they (the coaches) get paid the big bucks, so they can get us open. It’s pretty impressive.”
How does Paul Petrino see the offense doing in their first game Saturday against Western Illinois?

“I hope real good,” Petrino said. “Our expectations are always high and we expect to go out there and move the ball up and down the field and score touchdowns. So, that’s what we’re expecting to do and we’re never going to be happy with anything less than that.”

Here are some other notes:

— De’Anthony Curtis (knee) should be available Saturday for the season opener, Petrino said. Curtis was listed fourth on the depth chart yesterday.

“The last two days have been very encouraging with De’Anthony,” Petrino said.

Lucas Miller and Carlton Salters are still battling for the starting spot at the ‘W’ receiver, Petrino said. For now, Miller is the guy.

“Him and Carlton are very similar to Joe (Adams) and Jarius (Wright) right now,” Petrino said. “It’s still an ongoing battle. I’ve actually moved one in front of the other a couple of days and they keep battling back and forth. To be honest, they’ve still got two more days of practice to determine who will be that. As of right now, Lucas is the guy.”

Wright is the starter over fellow true freshman Wright at the ‘Z’ receiver slot.

Practice is about to wrap up today and offensive coordinator Paul Petrino is expected to address the media. I’ll update this post with some info from today’s practice as soon as I make the trek down to the practice fields and back to the Broyles Complex.

Until then, read one of the lengthiest press releases in history (actually, it’s not, but it’s pretty long and informative). Athletics director Jeff Long lined out the structure of the UA athletics department in a news release, which you can read here if you’d like. If you wanna know who runs what, and who oversees who, check it out.

I’ll be back a.s.a.p.
