VIDEO: Razorbacks hit the practice field

You could feel it in the air. And it wasn’t just the heat, which reached about 100 degrees on the practice field. In case you missed the sensation Monday in Fayetteville, let me spell it out for you:

It’s football season, folks.

The Hogs hit the practice field for the first time in “fall” camp, and head coach Bobby Petrino was all right with dishing out praise for freshmen like De’Anthony Curtis, Joe Adams and Jarius Wright. All of whom, by the way, made nice plays Monday.

But Petrino wasn’t too happy with the offensive line. You can see and hear more about this directly from the Head Hog himself in our new multimedia section by clicking here.

Here are some more notes from the first day:

— Cornerback Jerrell Norton had surgery on a hernia earlier today. Petrino says he’ll be out four to six weeks and that the hernia was discovered during a routine physical recently.

— It was hot outside.

— Freshman receiver Joe Adams missed a couple of catches, bobbled and dropped a punt return, but also made some nice plays in the passing game.

“I just wasn’t watching the ball and I was letting my eye off the ball,” Adams said. “It’s frustrating. I can’t do anything about it, so I just look forward to the next one.”

Adams showed quite a bit of speed, outgaining several defenders on long pass plays.

— Freshman tailback De’Anthony Curtis caught quite a few balls out of the backfield and receiver Rod Coleman ran a reverse during one session.

Ernest Mitchell, fresh off paying a $150 fine after a citation in Forrest City, is still recovering from a knee injury and Petrino says the defensive tackle has a lot of work to do to get back into the playing rotation.

— It was hot outside. … But about 75 Hog fans showed up to watch the Razorbacks in shorts and helmets.

“I don’t see how they were sitting out there all practice,” Adams said. “I guess they’re true fans.”

Plenty of players were asked about the weather. Redshirting quarterback Ryan Mallett, who we’ll have more on in the Northwest Arkansas Times on Tuesday, had a good response to the weather and the media barrage.

“The question comes around every August, ‘Is it hot?’ Well, yeah, it’s hot but if you play football, you chose to play. If it’s too hot for you, you gotta go,” Mallett said.

The football program has its annual media day Tuesday. We’ll have more from that.
