Tyson Gay carries on with guidance of 3 women
ESPN The Magazine has a fantastic feature on former Razorback sprinter Tyson Gay in this month’s issue. As you may already know, Gay injured a hamstring in the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 200 meter race in Eugene, Ore., on July 5 but will still take part in the 100 meter race in the Olympic Games on Aug. 15.
Gay had already qualified for the 100 meter earlier during the trails but his dreams of competing in two events at the Olympic Games in Beijing, China were dashed as he crumpled to the ground 40 meters into the 200-meter race (see video below).

ESPN The Magazine’s Luke Cyphers delves into Gay’s upbringing and the ones he surrounds himself with in times of desperation, especially like the timing of the last few weeks as Gay strengthens himself for a return in the Olympics.
Here’s more from Cyphers:
Nonetheless, Gay will take his place in the blocks for the 100 in Beijing, vying again for the title of fastest man on the planet, on the planet’s biggest stage. When he does, it will not be an act of defiance, but of perseverance. It is a trait he acquired from the women he’s always looked up to.
Those three women are former Lady’Back and long-time friend Veronica Campbell-Brown; his mother, Daisy Gay Lowe; and sister, Tiffany. Each one gets a section of the story, and The Mag’s inset photos of Gay and his friends as he grew up are cool to look at.
Ever since he’s been running, Gay has battled something. His sister, his grades, his coaching situation, [Asafa] Powell, [Usain] Bolt. Now it’s the calendar and his left hammy.
Again, a highly recommended read.
