Mitchell pays $150 fine after settling charges

Arkansas defensive tackle Ernest Mitchell appeared in District Court today in Forrest City and emerged from the courthouse $150 poorer, but it seems things could have been worse.

MitchellThe Associated Press is reporting this afternoon that Mitchell’s charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance, simultaneous possession of drugs and a firearm, and improper display of tags were amended to one count of possession of an instrument of crime.

Mitchell paid a $150 fine to settle the misdemeanor charge and it looks like he’ll be on his way to Fayetteville in time for camp on Sunday.

Mitchell was stopped by Arkansas State Police on June 30 when an officer in Forrest City noticed that his tags were not displayed properly. The 22-year-old was said to have a small amount of drugs, which appeared to be marijuana, in the vehicle. A small-caliber handgun was also found in Mitchell’s vehicle.

Mitchell had surgery on a knee in January and his status heading into camp is unknown. Defensive coordinator Willy Robinson said Tuesday that the defensive tackle’s pain threshold and mobility will not be known until the Hogs hit the practice fields Monday.

With Mitchell’s citation, six Razorbacks have had run-ins with the law this offseason. Arkansas fans have got to be hoping that this will be the last as the Hogs kick off pre-season practices Monday.

  1. We all need to take a deep breath and relax, folks. College kids are KIDS. They make “college kid” mistakes, just like the rest of us.

The key is learning from the mistake - and everyone needs a second chance on that one, sometimes.

If Mitchell does not learn anything from this mess, then pull his scholarship and cut him loose.
