SEC Media Days: Richt still faces celebration issue
HOOVER, Ala. — Wherever he goes, Georgia head coach Mark Richt is going to have to address it. And Thursday the issue came up again at SEC Media Days.
Richt may have spent as much time answering questions concerning his team’s raucous on-the-field celebration against Florida last year as he did about the Bulldogs’ legitimate national title hopes this season.
Richt went into more detail about the celebration that drew some criticism, especially from the Florida faithful. Says Richt, the celebration idea came after the Bulldogs beat Vanderbilt by just 10 and showed little emotion in the squad’s loss to Tennessee earlier in the season. Looking for a spark, Richt told his team to celebrate and get a penalty after the Bulldogs’ first touchdown against Florida.
“Even if we have to fake it, we’re going to have more energy,” Richt told his team.
Richt expected his 11 offensive players to maybe jump around on the field and get a little rowdy. Little did he know that his entire team would rush the field, causing one of the biggest touchdown celebrations in college history.
Florida head coach Urban Meyer addressed the matter in his biography that will be released in September and hinted toward a rebuttal in this year’s upcoming game.
“That wasn’t right. It was a bad deal,” Meyer says Myer in the upcoming book. “And it will forever be in the mind of Urban Meyer and in the mind of our football team. … So we’ll handle it. And it’s going to be a big deal.”
