Nutt makes ‘worst list’ for Heisman campaigns
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch today put together a nice package highlighting Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel’s chances at the Heisman Trophy this season.
With their story, the staff put together an interesting list of the most memorable and forgettable Heisman campaigns. Former Arkansas running back Darren McFadden, who many believed should have won the coveted stiff-arm trophy last season, made the forgettable list because of one man — Mr. Houston Nutt.
Here’s more:
Coaches have a new term. When a fellow coach goes into a frenzy, he is said to have “gone Houston Nutt.’’ As Arkansas’ coach last season, Nutt ranted after a win against LSU that voters had overlooked all-purpose back Darren McFadden and “had better put him in the Heisman.’’ McFadden placed second.
Wouldn’t it hurt to be put inside the Heisman?
I doubt McFadden’s, “I got that wood right here,” helped either. Although, you gotta like McFadden’s jab at Les Miles’ incorrect pronunciation of Arkansas.
Nutt’s rant after the 50-48 win over No. 1 LSU last season wasn’t his first. From what I hear, he called a few plays in that win over Ole Miss in 2005.

The Post-Dispatch is my hometown newspaper. Its amazing how such a small world it is and how you guys not only spotted this article but found the part about Nutt.
Nice work. Isn’t it interesting how the rest of the College Football world sees Nutt?
Our program is so much better off without him. If anyone doubts that, look at who’s players have gotten in a brush with the law over the summer. I don’t see any of Petrino’s recruits making mischief, testing his patience and resolve.
[…] According to The St. Louis Dispatch (by way of The Slophouse blog), Houston Nutt’s over-the-top rant about Darren McFadden needing to be in the Heisman race might have hurt his chances. The guy finished 2nd to a player […]
