Hoops Notes: Pelphrey wants practice facility

There are several articles today here on WholeHogSports.com concerning SEC basketball from a coaches teleconference yesterday.

UA head coach John Pelphrey believes a basketball facility is a must on the UA campus.

Arkansas, believe it or not, is the only school in the SEC that doesn’t have/in the process of building a basketball practice facility. Arkansas head coach John Pelphrey wants to change that.

Other interesting topics were hit on during the teleconference, including the ethics of recruiting, specifically if it’s right or wrong for a coach to recruit a high school sophomore. Pelphrey, who isn’t opposed to the idea, is recruiting three sophomore-to-bes this summer and one has already given him a commitment.

We also have a couple of write-ups on the UA’s incoming freshman/juco class.

Also up for your enjoyment is discussion on the movement of the 3-point line this upcoming season and the NBA rule which leads to many “one and done” years in college.

  1. Most schools don’t have anything close to a Bud Walton Arena, so this hasn’t been a problem in the past. However, the others have started to catch up. I agree that a practice facility is needed — and soon. It’s an arms race and we need to stay out in front. I think the logical place to put it is right across the street. They would have to displace the married student housing, but that’s not such a bad thing, because those apartments have been in bad shape for a long time.

  2. I agree, borntobe, the SEC is a new battleground from week to week - in most sports, but certainly in football and basketball. To stay competitive, everything starts with recruiting and recruits always focus on facilities. It’s time for a practice facility. Go Hogs!

  3. Need to visit the campus again borntobehogwild as Carlson Terrace no longer exists as the new tailgating area and the softball stadium now take up this space. Best bet for a practice facility is to place it where the present softball field exist or possibly behind the honor dorm (Pomfret) where the old outdoor tennis courts were. Like the others i also favor a practice facility for basketball. Go Coach Pel and Collen and the Razorback basketballers!!!

  4. The university has been discussing replacing the HPER building with a completely new facility with would be located closer to the main campus area - probably down the hill from Kimpel Hall. The HPER, which is located next to Barnhill Arena and behind the Softball stadium, is the ideal facility to be converted to a practice area for Razorback Athletics. There are plenty of courts already in place for basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, and the spirit program to practice on - and ample space to expand the athletic department’s offices and probably just about anything else they may want to do with it. It isn’t currently serving the needs of university students, because it is too small for 17,000 students to use daily - but ideal for the athletic department to use. The university is also discussing moving the Honor’s Quarters (Pomfret Hall) closer to campus. If this is done the building could be demolished and a facility could be built in place of this and over the adjacent parking lots.
