Weems shines in NBA summer league debut

Former Razorback Sonny Weems scored 17 points in his summer league debut with the Denver Nuggets. Weems came off the bench and provided quite the offensive spurt for 21 minutes, hitting 8-of-15 shots from the field.

Sonny WeemsWeems also grabbed 3 rebounds, but the second-round NBA pick admits he has a lot to work on. He wants to get to the free throw line more, for one, he said. He also is looking forward to one thing if he makes the Nuggets’ roster in October:

“I love playing defense,” Weems told HOOPSWORLD on Saturday in Las Vegas.  “That’s one thing that I like in my game a lot.  I’ll guard anybody.”

There’s an interview of Weems available on the HOOPSWORLD Web site. No direct link is available, but if you go here and click on “Summer League” look under the July 13 videos and you’ll see Sonny’s mug.

Undrafted former Razorbacks Steven Hill (Portland) and Darian Townes (Sacramento) have yet to play in the summer league. Portland will play its first game Monday at 7 p.m. CDT. Townes did not play in the Kings’ first game Saturday, but Sac-town is scheduled to return to the court Tuesday at 9 p.m. CDT.
