Sorry, ladies: Lady’Backs now just Razorbacks

So, the UA hired a new Lady Razorbacks volleyball coach yesterday. The consensus is that this is a great hire for the Lady’Backs program. Robert Pulliza has been all over the country as an assistant and has recruited some of the best volleyball talent along the way.

The Arkansas Lady, err, RazorbacksLady Razorback fans should feel comfortable with their volleyball coach hire today.

The strikeouts aren’t a mistake, that’s what you’ll be reading in the papers today. Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long announced yesterday that the Lady’Backs name shall be erased from the record. With the combining of the men’s and women’s athletics department, no woman shall be referred to as a Lady Razorback or Lady’Back from here forward.

“We’re all Razorbacks, and that’s something you’ll see more of in the future,” Long said.

Anyway, I’m just trying to gauge everyone’s take on this change. Do you like that Tom Collen’s Lady’Backs will now be referred to as Tom Collen’s women’s basketball team?

Or do you even really care? Give us your take.

  1. AD Long correctly identifies both men and women as razorbacks. I like the change. Reporters and headline writers, however, will have to learn to distinguish basketball and track teams to minimize confusion.

  2. I like the change, too. “Lady’Backs” sounded weird, unless you were a fan and knew that it was short for “Lady Razorbacks.” Razorbacks is a pretty masculine-sounding name, though, so I can see where the word Lady placed in front could be appropriate. However, shortening it to Lady’Backs doesn’t tell the unacquainted person anything about what that team nickname is.

  3. I like the distinction between the Razorbacks and the Lady Razorbacks. I feel that this is an unnecessary change as many other universities continue to classify their women’s programs as “Lady ….” It is my opinion that most women’s programs fall to the waste side when compared to men’s programs, thus giving a sense that they don’t matter as much, and having the distinction says to me that they will always be recognized as women. I also feel that the separate logos make the Arkansas athletic programs unique. However, I do feel that the Lady Razorback Athletic Department will benefit greatly from the merger with the Razorback Athletic Department…. but, I still the distinction between the 2 programs should remain. …and I am also excited about the new website featuring BOTH programs.
