Seeing Red: Weems goes to Bulls, then to Nuggets

Sonny Weems was selected by the Chicago Bulls with the 39th overall pick in the NBA draft, but he never got a chance to put on a red hat. The Bulls dealt Weems to the Nuggets soon after his selection Thursday night, according to reports.

The Bulls will get a second-round pick from Denver in 2009, pending league approval.

That should help Weems considerably, considering there were eight other guards on the Bulls’ roster after the draft Thursday night.

UPDATE (1:09 a.m.): The Rocky Mountain News spoke to some in the Denver organization Thursday night about the trade. The Nuggets, who traded their No. 20 pick to Charlotte before the draft, seemed intent on not drafting a player until 2009.

But then Weems was just too much to pass up and the trade with Chicago happened.

Here’s more from the RMN:

Nuggets vice president of basketball operations Mark Warkentien called him very athletic.

“World class,” Warkentien said. “He’s so athletic that he can fit in the NBA as an energy guy.”

Vice president of player personnel Rex Chapman said the Nuggets had the 6-foot-6 Weems rated in the late teens among draft-eligible players.

He said Weems, who will be with the Nuggets in next month’s summer league in Las Vegas, can play shooting guard, small forward and some point guard.

It’s interesting to note that Chapman was a starter for the Kentucky Wildcats when Pelphrey was redshirting in Lexington during the 1987-88 season. It’s always good to have connections.
