Media Beware: Petrino all about winning, not conversing

Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino isn’t worried about what I think of him. He’s also not worried about how the Arkansas or national media view him, says Jason Veltkamp, Arkansas’ strength and conditioning coach.

And for good reason, Veltkamp told me in an interview earlier this morning. Simply put, winning is of the most importance and it takes a serious approach to get there.

Veltkamp should know. He’s been associated with the Petrinos in some form or fashion since he played college ball for Bob Petrino Sr., at Carroll College in Montana.

Outside the office and film room at the Broyles Athletic Complex, Petrino “pretty much” remains serious at all times, Veltkamp said. The fans love it, while some in the national media feel they have been rubbed wrongly by Petrino’s demeanor.

“The media here is a different deal,” Veltkamp said. “There’s a lot of it and it’s the only show in the state, but that’s not coach Petrino’s M.O. It never has been with our program and it never will be our M.O. Our mission is to go out and win football games.”

While some in the media would love open access and a few elbow rubs from Petrino (hey, it makes our jobs easier), the fact remains that football is all business for this new Razorbacks staff.

“Those guys up there are as comfortable sitting in the film room all day long as anywhere else in the world,” Veltkamp said. “They wouldn’t trade that for anything. We’re going to go out more prepared than anybody because of that. I’m 100 percent confident in that.”

  1. Great! Its about time we had someone who had their priorities in perspective, instead of their own interests!

  2. Coach Petrino is significantly different from his predecessor. Successful head coaches come in many shapes and sizes, with many different personality styles.

Most all of us are very pleased and excited about our Hawg future under Coach Bobby Petrino’s leadership!

I hope we will all exercise some patience in the Win-Loss record for a couple of years, because we lost some tremendous players after the 2006 and 2007 seasons, and it could be a real struggle in 2008 and 2009.

  3. He’s being paid 35% more than Nutt in his best year at UA. The expectations are higher. Petrino knows it and I believe relishes it. He’ll feed off adversity. Win or lose, he’s going to mold players with a level of concentration and dedication unlike anything we’ve ever seen before on Hog squad.

I have a strong feeling that the Razorbacks are going to suprise a few people on a couple Saturdays this fall when they’re least expected to contend.

I’d be willing to bet you’ll see that “all business” attitude in the players from get go, game one and on.

  4. What does the media have to do with winning games? Give BP and his staff a couple of years and let them coach. Good things are coming and I sorta like this new approach. GO HOGS!

  5. WOW!
I cant wait for the season to start! Thank God we got rid of old HDN! Now that he is gone, I am ready to win some championships! Petrino is all about WINNING! Now we can win championships! We have the best coach in the country and now a National Championsip is reality!
We should win the division and the conference this year now that old HDN is finnally gone! I am ready for at least an 11 win season that is better than old HDN’s 10 win seasons!
GO HOG WILD! GO PETRINO! GO UNDEFEATED!
