McFadden agrees to six-year, $60 million deal
While you were sleeping, Darren McFadden was setting himself up to make some big bucks. The former Arkansas tailback agreed to a six-year, $60 million deal with the Oakland Raiders late Thursday night. He'll receive $26 million in guaranteed money.
McFadden's agent, Ian Greengross, got the deal done in just two days of negotiations, according to David White of the San Francisco Chronicle. The Raiders' three-day mini-camp just ended and now the franchise can rest assure knowing their first-round draft pick will be at training camp July 26.
Here's more:
McFadden's quick signing stands in stark contrast to last year's contract holdout by quarterback JaMarcus Russell, the No. 1 overall draft pick who did not sign until Sept. 11 - two days after the regular season opener. Russell got a six-year contract worth up to $61 million with about $32 million guaranteed.
The Raiders haven't signed a first-round draft pick before July 11 since 1995, when they signed No. 18 overall selection Napoleon Kaufman on May 25. They typically wait until after the Fourth of July to begin rookie negotiations, but both sides were eager to get a deal done as soon as feasible.
McFadden's late-night signing marked him as the 21st player from this year's draft to snag a deal. With the deal out of the way, now it looks like he can concentrate fully on househunting with his family.
