Nutt recommends Monk to Bears

Remember Houston Nutt, the former Razorbacks football coach? No? Yeah, no one is talking about him any more. Doesn't he coach at Ole Miss?Houston Nutt

Sarcasm and a bevy of hyperlinks aside, Nutt reportedly helped former Arkansas receiver Marcus Monk get drafted by Chicago in the seventh round of the NFL Draft last week. free webpage hit counter

Kudos to coach Nutt. It's always nice to see former coaches looking out for their players, even if they're now at a rival school.

Bears general manager Jerry Angelo explains what happened:

“Monk’s going to be an interesting prospect,” Angelo said. “We didn’t really need a receiver. [But] we really like this player. [Arkansas coach] Houston Nutt kept text-messaging [Bears area scout] Chris Ballard: ‘You’ve got to take this guy. He’s going to be a heck of a player for you. He’s a great kid and a winner.’ So they were great fans of his.”

Yeah, yeah. Insert text messaging and FOI jokes here.

It may have also helped Monk's cause that Bears head coach Lovie Smith was in Fayetteville for his stellar Pro Day in March. Smith was the only NFL head coach in attendance.

  1. Nutt has as much influence in the NFL as I have running for President of the United States. Lets get real. Maybe Lovie Smith saw some potential in Monk and chose to bring him in.

The only text messaging Houston knows is to Donna Bragg.

  2. I hear tell that Nutt has made a few other calls in the past to ensure some other players drop down the boards. I am sure Hillis would thank him too.

HDN has ruined more college careers than drugs or alcohol. Way to go Nutt and good luck with that one Mississippi.

    Beopig

  3. Give me a break. I am absolutely sure that ANY AND ALL of the UA players would be over joyed at the prospect of Houston Nutt sending a recommendation to ANY NFL team for them, You boys are OUT OF TOUCH with the rest of the WORLD. (There is a big world outside the State of our beloved Arkansas by the way) Houston Nutt is a respected coach AND you better get over it. He wishes NOTHING but the best for Marcus and ANY former Razorback who has a CHANCE at the NFL.

  4. Thank you for bringing a little sanity to this disturbing thread, hoglover.

  5. Respected? Respected for what??? If its too disturbing a thread for you to read, then go to the Ole Miss site.

Name me 12 players that START for NFL teams that were coached by Houston Nutt during his tenure at Arkansas. Before you attempt to reel them off by going to depth charts on NFL.com, I said 12 that START!!!

  6. OK ua87, your postings are disturbing because you refuse to let this issue go. Nutt is gone; you have what you want. I have what I want. And I will say that you are STUPID because of your assumption that because I find this thread disturbing that I am a Nutt fan and that I should root for Ole Miss. I own season tickets and will be the loudest one booing Nutt (for his lack of loyalty) when walks on the field, and for you to insuate otherwise from one sentence shows what an IDIOT you are. I wanted him gone, and am happy to have Petrino, but I'm a positive kind of guy who likes to look forward to what we are going to have rather than kicking dust on the guy who left and bringing his personal life into it. At some point, there has to be a little thing called humanity, and personal epithets and innuendo (your Donna Bragg comment) should be removed from the discussion. You should be better than that. I can only hope that you were BORN in 1987 and you have some much needed time to mature and leave things in the past. Because if you GRADUATED in 1987, then there is no hope for you. The fact of the matter is that it was a fine gesture to call the Bears for a former player. Did the Bears draft Monk because of it? Who knows, but for you to denigrate the man for helping out one of our own players who we have rooted for and like is ridiculous and ,yes, disturbing. Quite frankly, you make me sick.

  7. skezell, you took the words right out of my mouth. i disagreed with the hiring of HDN at the start, i didn't think he had enough "big time college" experience to warrant a position as head coach at an SEC school. i did however, come to like and respect the man, if not for the way he coached, but for the kind of man that he is.he ALWAYS had the university of arkansas' best interest in mind. he, like many others here in the state bled hog red. he was as loyal a coach as we'd ever find, to the university and to his kids.i hear people gripe about his offense, don't blame HDN, he was just running FRANKS offense. ua87, if i get my way, you'll be banned from this site. your derogatory comments towards people you don't know are just too much for decent people to tolerate.skezell is correct, you are a stupid low life, and you make me sick too.

  8. oh, and by the way.... we up here do highly approve of the hiring of Bobby Petrino.

  9. Alright, as of today, starters on the depth charts include: Jamaal Anderson, Shawn Andrews, Ken Hamlin, Chris Houston, Jason Peters, Bobbie Williams, Tony Ugoh. George Wilson (unbelievably, as a safety) and Matt Jones recently have made big impacts on their teams. That's just the CURRENT rosters. There have been others in the past 10 years, including (unfortunately) Batman Carroll, and then there's those guys who are going to start in the NFL like... oh what are their names?... D-Mac and Felix.
So while we're issuing challenges, let's try naming all the college coaches with 7 or more players STARTING right now in the NFL (much less 12). I have a feeling you'd be looking at a pretty respectable list.
Maybe you're right, maybe NFL guys don't care what Houston has to say... but they sure seem to like his players.

  10. To add to jbd13's point. Do you know how many starters are on depth charts from LSU? 13. What about Alabama? 7. OK, Auburn must have loads of starters, right? The have 8. Oh. 2005 national champion Texas? 14. What about the supposed best program ever, USC? I counted 17. Apparently, 12 is pretty hard to come by for even the elite programs of the nation, let alone a program that was twisting in the wind before 1998. I think most people can agree that HDN needed to go, and even those who didn't think he should have gone probably have solid reasons for believing so. But the past is the past, and I believe that we should respect the body of work that he created for a program that was DOA from 1991 to 1998.

  11. Well obviously somebody felt compelled to denegrate this thread with insults and name calling.

    Skezell,

Your "holier than thou" attitude has its own smell to it. Yes, I did graduate in '87, make an obnoxious amount of money in a very rewarding career and am proud to be a Razorback fan ever since 1971 when I sat in a driving rain in Little Rock at the tender age of six, watching the Hogs beat Texas with my father, who worked his ass off to put THREE sons through the U of A.

If my bend gets a little sarcastic, its only because I don't see the good he did at Arkansas. He polarized a state and regretably feel he will do the same in Mississippi. I do see a potential awakening and blossoming of the program that can happen under Petrino, who I believe will have a much more ethical approach.

I don't think you'll see a kid treated like Drew Combs under Petrino's staff.

  12. Originally attended Arkansas ... redshirted in 2004 and was not part of the Razorback program in 2005 ... the Pelfrey All-State kicker for Stratford High School in 2003 ... was also honorable-mention All-District 21-5A ... a two-year starter and letterman ... totaled 106 points in his junior and senior years combined ... recorded 11 unassisted tackles on kickoffs during those two seasons ... did not have a kickoff returned for a touchdown against him his entire prep career ... also lettered twice in track & field ... played on the junior varsity basketball team ... lettered in the discus and shot put as a freshman and sophomore ... Student Body President and Student Council President ...dad played football at Arkansas (1971-72) ... has an aunt, Janet Combs, who played tennis for the Razorbacks (1977-78) ... a business marketing major with a minor in communications ... plans on attending law school or graduate school

this is the bio on drew combs....looks like a good quality kid. so whats the problem ? did HDN beat him? was he treated horribly by the Uof A staff? maybe the young man wanted to attend a school with a christian atmosphere!! maybe there was just a personality conflict and the kid decided transferring was in his best interest. no school (not even my beloved UofA) can land, OR KEEP all the players they'd like to have. it's just part of the business, part of life. coach petrino will have the very same thing happen to him, as will every coach in america. are you sure you graduated?? you don't seem very smart to me, or wise.

  13. Thing to remember here boys: HDN didn't leave us; he was fired by UA undoubtly pressured by idiots like you ua87 and your springdale family. I was not a HDN supporter, but he brought us from the Joe Kines and Jack crowe era and put us closer to the map. He got us to the next level (not the top level, but the next.) I agree that we needed a change, not because people believed he was a moron, but because our program was not advancing. HDN is a decent coach. I do think Petrino will get us there, but if HDN hadn't gotten us to this point, we would be looking for coaches at Texas A&I or Idaho Tech. I would like to move on, but something tells me the idiots who forced out HDN are the ones who can't stop talking about him.

  14. "Idiot," "Stupid," Read my posts. Did I call any of you that?

Don't throw rocks from glass houses. You certainly shouldn't be around the resulting sharp objects either.

And for you, "themanupstairs," now there's a play on words, Drew Combs was forced from the program, bullied and made fun of by James Shibest, who liked to call him "the one arm kicker" (a moniker from a small-minded man who felt compelled to make up for his own character flaws by poking fun at those with disabilities).

Jeesh. Obviously none of you catch a little Letterman or Leno now and then. One snide comment about Nutt and you'd have sworn I had shot your dog or relieved myself in your flower garden.

    Lighten' up. GO HOGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. hey guys I'm back! Been busy with the boys traveling from ball park to ball park, 87 looks like you need a little help bro, sleezell good to see you are still on the high horse, tweedle dumb up stairs keep it up, you'll give me someone to give the rest of these guys a good laugh as well as have some good debates. Just here to say Im back guys. I'll probably comment on the next blog!

  16. Crittco,

Ahhh, you're back! A ray of light in the midst of high winds and thick clouds. Hope all is well.

  17. OK, again, ua87. I was content to leave your oringinal dig at Nutt at "disturbing." It is disturbing because the story was about how HDN put in a good word for one his former players, which the GM acknowledged was a factor in their selection, and you would rather make stale comments about his alleged affair and make unbackable claims that he is not respected despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Your retort to my assertion that your post was disturbing was, and I quote, "If its too disturbing a thread for you to read, then go to the Ole Miss site." The only way that your reply could have been MORE immature was if you had said, "If you like Houston Nutt so much, why don't you marry him?" Forgive me if I find that stupid or idiotic.

Now, you are attempting to play the martyr and act like you were misunderstood and that you were joking. I would say that you are backpedalling because you realize that most people are sick of your stupid bullcrap. I don't think you were joking because all of your posts on other threads contain similar epithets toward a man who isn't even in the state anymore.

Furthermore, your attempts to bring me down to your level are feeble and indicative of a person who can't argue his way out of a wet paper bag. I stand by my assertion that you are stupid and an idiot. Stupid people and idiots are people who believe that they are gifted enough to put sarcasm in writing and have people recognize it (although I don't think you were joking, and if you were, then you simply have the sense of humor of an eighth grader, you know, kind of like Letterman and Leno). Stupid people and idiots also have no sense of timing. If you were joking, you chose to make joke at Nutt's expense rather than expressing gratitude that one of our own was drafted. If you see that as "holier than thou," then so be it; apparently, I am not alone in my opinion of your and riculous rantings against a ghost. Then you make some stupid, hackneyed phrase and that's supposed to make me change my mind. I may not have the "obnoxious" money that you have, but at least I am not obnoxious either. I just call them like I see them.

Finally, I don't think that you should be the one dispensing advise to us. I never accused you of shooting my dog or urinating in my flower garder. I am accusing you, ua87, of being an immature idiot who should leave alleged attempted comedy to the professionals, because none of us are laughing. You should let go and grow out of your hatred for Nutt and live in the present because the past is in Mississppii and we are better off for it.

  18. Like Letterman and Leno, I laugh all the way to the bank when I think of people like you, sleezel (thanks for the correction, Crittco).

For most coaches that carry themselves with grace, it never reaches the press that they put in a good word for a player. For Eddie Robinson, it didn't matter that his players were discriminated against or that he had to make sandwiches for them because he knew they wouldn't be allowed into restaurants in towns of away games from Grambling. That's an example to respect. For Nutt, I'm pretty confident that he made sure someone knew he did that so that he could see himself in the papers. That's just the way he is.

It sure looks like you "came down to my level," with your last comment. We definitely are better off for it that he's somewhere else. Petrino sure appears to be picking up the pieces and attracting the interest once again amongst fathers who want their boys to play in a program they won't be ashamed of.

  19. power of persuasion is REAL

    GO HOGS

  20. hey dudes, as someone is south LA once said: "can't we all get along?"

regardless of the underlying circumstances, HDN is past tense and BP is the present, as well as the future. we should all get on board and give the guy a united and passionate fan base, in addition to a reasonable amount of time to take the program to another level.

in 2 to 3 years, the razorbacks will be in the BCS loop. it's time to stop all the fussing and enjoy the ride. GO HOGS - from deep in the heart of texas.

  21. ua87 - i suppose you were there and personally heard James Shibest utter these words? i seriously doubt that, you are just repeating rumors as sworn truth when you really haven't got a clue as to what you're talking about. and when did you ever stop at "one snide comment"?? you've been an HDN detractor for a long time and have uttered a long string of slanderous comments about him. its time to let a dead horse lie, we have an upgrade in the head coach department, let's all be happy with that.

  22. No rumors, true facts straight from Drew's Dad, a business client of my brother. There you go, boyupstairs. You know not what you speak of.

Yes, we do have a most deserved upgrade in coach now.
