The University sent out a release earlier this morning to announce the scheduling of a 4 p.m. press conference today for “a major announcement pertaining to Arkansas head cross country and track and field coach John McDonnell and the future of the University of Arkansas men’s track and field program.”

Along with McDonnell, UA athletics director Jeff Long will be in attendance, as will former UA AD Frank Broyles. Chancellor John White will also be at the announcement.

The last year certainly has been one of sweeping changes at the UA athletics department, hasn’t it?

First it was Stan Heath’s firing, Dana Altman’s hiring and one-day tenure, Broyles’ departure, Long’s arrival, Houston Nutt’s removal of the “golden handcuffs,” White’s impending resignation and now this, the possible retirement of the UA’s most successful coach in its history.

McDonnell may have summed the last year up best in January when he made a light-hearted remark after White announced his intentions in January to resign from the UA’s chancellor seat this June:

“It’s getting kind of scary, wondering who is going to be next,”McDonnell said with a laugh. “I better check to make sure the locks haven’t been changed on my door.

“As long as my key works, I’ll be OK.”

  1. Even John Wooden pales miserably compared to John McDonnell. It may be well beyond our lifetimes, maybe never again, will someone attain such success in college athletics as Coach McDonnell. He deserves to retire. There’s nothing left to prove.

He is THE coaching legend of the Razorbacks, hands down.
