Razorbacks head coach Bobby Petrino did not address the media yesterday after the scrimmage that consisted of more than 160 plays, but according to a report in The Arkansas Traveler, the UA’s student newspaper, Mallett fractured the thumb and will miss the remainder of spring drills.

The Traveler story does not cite a source, and nothing has officially been confirmed by UA Sports Information or Petrino.

Mallett finished yesterday’s scrimmage 5 of 11 for 41 yards before the injury.

Mallett transfered to the UA in January from the University of Michigan, where he played last season as a true freshman. Mallett filed a waiver to the NCAA asking permission for immediate eligibility this fall. NCAA guidelines state that a student-athlete who transfers between Division I schools must sit out one year.

  1. Number 15 looks very good in Razorback red.

  2. No disrespect to Mallett and I can’t wait to see which one of the dynamic young QBs will lead us but this year is Casey’s year and everyone needs to go ahead and rally around him. Spring has shown he is ready and fully capable of being a good SEC QB. In the SEC it has been shown that if there is one position experience wins it is QB and i’m ready for the state to start showin Casey some love!!!

  3. I agree. Casey has paid his dues and developed into a decent SEC QB. Experience is invaluable. As long as Coach thinks he’s the best QB on campus, we need to get behind him and help build his confidence. I’ve said from the beginning that I thought Mallett’s request for eligibility in 2008 shouldn’t be approved. NCAA has the rule for a reason, and it’s actually a good one. I just hope he recovers quickly and completely from the thumb injury, and I too look forward to seeing all the QB talent battle it out over the next few years.

  4. Concur, BTBHW. No. 11 looks pretty good in Razorback red, as well - and, should [finally] have an opportunity to thrive in Petrino’s way of playing offense.

  5. […] tuesday. Ryan Mallett is out for the rest of the spring with a thumb injury. The Traveler says it’s a fracture. FYI…USC Trojan Mitch Mustain lost the competition for the team’s starting […]

  6. I agree that this will be Casey’s year. He had almost 1700 yards with 18 TD’s last year and played on a team that had the 2 best running backs in the nation along with Peyton Hillis who will be missed. Mallett, N. Dick,& Mortenson give good depth but Mallett will probably have to sit out. There is no doubt this coaching staff will put the best on the field. CAN’T WAIT!!
