Slammin’ Sonny: Weems to participate in slam dunk contest
Arkansas senior forward Sonny Weems has had his fair share of highlight-worthy dunks. The alley-oop against Tennessee in the SEC Tournament this season comes to mind.
Well, someone out there has been watching, because the player with arguably one of the best names in basketball will be in San Antonio this weekend at the 20th annual State Farm College Slam Dunk and 3-Point Championships on Thursday.
Here’s more from the UA:
Weems, a senior from West Memphis, Ark., is one of eight competitors in the slam dunk portion of the event. Joining him are James Gist of Maryland, J.R. Giddens of New Mexico, Patrick Ewing Jr., of Georgetown, Brian Randle of Illinois, Joey Dorsey of Memphis, Will Bullard of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Deron Washington of Virginia Tech.
Weems recently completed his Razorback career by earning first-team All-Southeastern Conference honors, as well as all-district honors by both the United States Basketball Writers Association and the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
Weems is the first Razorback to compete in the competition since Brandon Dean, who also shares the No. 13 jersey, in 2002. Remember that? Before Dwight Howard was wearing a Superman cape, Mr. Dean was donning some Man of Steel duds.
