Odom, Gamecocks survive SEC Tourney first round

In somewhat of a surprise, the South Carolina topped LSU, 77-73, in the opening game of the Southeastern Conference Basketball Tournament.

Little guard Devan Downey packed his stat line helped the Gamecocks to victory with 12 points, 11 assists three steals and 7 rebounds.

South Carolina’s victory means Dave Odom’s coaching career will last another game. The veteran South Carolina coach, who also headed up Wake Forests’ progam, will retire when South Carolina’s season ends.

By winning the Gamecocks earn the dubious distinction of facing top seeded Tennessee at noon in Friday’s second round.

  1. Why is this a surprise? LSU sucks and USC has taken care of business against the SEC west. If you read the story on this site just this morning it noted the dominance that the East has enjoyed over the West this year. Now if the Gamecocks win tomorrow, that will be surprise.
