Texas game in Fayetteville scrapped?

For those waiting anxiously to see Arkansas host Texas in football in 2009, you’re probably going to have to wait until 2014.

Arkansas requested to push back the Fayetteville game at least five years to alleviate a tough schedule in 2009, according to a Monday report in the Austin American-Statesman. Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds agreed to postpone the 2009 date and the deal may become official this week.

Here’s more:

A source with direct knowledge of the negotiations said Arkansas does not want to play both Texas and Texas A&M in the same non-conference season, on top of its Southeastern Conference slate.

The Razorbacks and Texas A&M are believed to be starting a series at the Dallas Cowboys’ new stadium in 2009 that will pay each team $5 million a year.

Arkansas and Texas were scheduled to play a home-and-home series starting next season. Bobby Petrino’s Hogs will still travel to Austin next year to play the Longhorns on Sept. 13, according to the report.

  1. screw UT. they are much less important than any team in the SEC. whatever.

  2. not to us old texas hogs-still the most important game they play-what a letdown-

  3. Well I admit I wasn’t looking too forward to playing both Texas and A&M in the same season, but one at home and one on the road (Dallas) might not have been too bad. I will feel a lot better tho if they don’t replace the 2009 Texas game with some directional Louisiana school.

  4. If we can’t be Texas, Texas A&M, and our SEC schedule, then we should not be consider for the National Campionship. We don’t have to play these teams at the first of the season like we did USC. But, I don’t see Florida dodgeing Florida State, or Georgia dodgeing Clemson. You get the picture.

I agree that this is a letdown. To judge how the Arkansas program has advanced since we left the SWC depends on how we play two of the top three teams that represented the SWC. After ten years, we should be at a pinnocle that these teams should be a
    BIG W AND NOTHING ELSE!!!

  5. Well lets just say, “That Sucks”, That is one game I really would like to see. Arkansas v. Texas is always one of those games you can throw records and rankings out the window, kinda like an Arkansas v. Tennessee game if you add about 50 years of tradition to it!

  6. I don’t like the importance that we always seem to place on the UT game. There is no doubt in my mind, the Razorbacks have lost more than a few of these games over the years because they [and the fans] get TOO amped up.

That needs to change, and slowly, seems to be doing so. The UA is clearly in a superior conference, our facilities are just as good and the fan base is better. We should reach a position of looking at UT like they look at UA and most other teams on their schedule. It’s just another game.

Regardless, I am not advocating that the Razorbacks duck the Horns — ever. However, the contest itself is far less imporant than any SEC game.

  7. i’m w/pgould hog…no directional school…how about Arkansas State??? Guaranteed sellout and a guaranteed win 29 out of every 30 years.

  8. I beg to differ with you, oink. A UA/ASU game would be a big mistake. We’d have nothing to gain and everything to lose. It’d be like another cream puff out of conference matchup that in years past, I loathed. No challenge and no real prep for the important games is all it would be.

Classic Texas arrogance has once again raised its ugly head. They’re to blame for the demise of the SWC. They wouldn’t let Tulsa, OU, Arizona or Arizona State in to make what could have been a super conference. They were greedy, wanting all the revenue to themselves. They’re where they should be with a few contenders and a majority of nothing.

  9. If the Hogs ever want to get to being National Champion contender annually they are gonna have to play more then one non little sisters of the poor non conference games in the same season, look at the USCs and Norte Dames of the world they always play a tougher non conference schedule then one named school and three Sunbelt or Divison II schools. And on the Arkansas State issue I think it would be a win, win, win situation for everyone involved, heck we help out Louisiana/Monroe which is a good thing but why not extendthe same effor o our own state school as good as Broyles was for the University that not playing in state school was one of his few mistakes.

  10. Stephan,

You and oink have got it all wrong. As is the case with UL-Monroe, UT-Chatt. and others, if the Hogs beat Arkansas State, who cares? Who REALLY cares?

Now lets look at the other side. Arkansas State pulls off an “Appalacian” State on Arkansas (not withstanding basketball this season, I’m talking the gridiron). Do you want the heckling?? Do you want ESPN to have another reason to dig on Petrino? Do you want guys like Nate Allen (who just tried to tempt Pelphrey’s loyalty) to blast on Petrino? C’mon guys. When you really think about it, this game would be worthless to the respect of the Hogs and the program.

  11. I would agree, UA87. Playing ASU would be a totally no win type of situation. The UA is a very unique school, similar to Nebraska and a handful of others in the country with state wide support. Frank Broyles recognized the undivided and loyal fan support from the beginning.

I would like to see ASU do well, but there is absolutely no reason for UA to play them.

  12. Let me do a “Clinton” and waffle just a little bit. My ONLY justification for playing ASU is “IF” we continue to play an excessive number (i.e. last year) of creampuffs. Otherwise, I say no how, no way! And as far as requesting that the UT game be delayed, I think it should have stayed on the schedule. Would there have been a bigger game in FV in ‘09? I think not.

  13. UA87,
You run the chance of heckling when you play La-Monroe, Chattanooga, or any other little sister of the poor school, why not help out the only other Division I school in the state to stay a Division I school and help improve their athletic level so the in state talent that doesn’t get an offer from UA, then they would still have a quality program to play for. And as much as we hate TU (Texas) we could cultivate a true yearly Rivalry for the Hog Nation. And besides a true Razorback would never worry about losing to ASU and there would only be one day out of the year that the State would even have a slight split in statewide support.
