McFadden is fast … really fast

Are you ready for this? Arkansas running back Darren McFadden ran a 4.27 in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine earlier this afternoon. In his second run, he hit 4.33. The times are unofficial.

UPDATE: Official times just came in. McFadden ran a 4.33 -- the second fastest among running backs. Running back Chris Johnson of ECU ran a staggering 4.24 official time for the fastest among the group and of the entire Combine.

The media was criticizing McFadden when he weighed in at 211 pounds the other day at the Combine, saying he had no lower-leg strength or muscle. NFL Network analyst Jamie Dukes even said Friday that whenever McFadden gets hit below the waist, he stops.

That may or may not be the case. What we do know, however, is that when McFadden steps onto an NFL field next year, he will be one of the fastest running backs in NFL history based off his Combine performance.

Felix Jones, who always had the perception of being faster than McFadden (at least on the corners), ran a 4.44 in the 40 today. His second run was even a bit slower at 4.47. Both times are unofficial. He didn't look too prepared, but he'll get a second chance at Arkansas' Pro Day on March 25.

Former Hog fullback Peyton Hillis ran a 4.58 in the 40, unofficially, to be the fastest fullback in this year's Combine so far.

  1. Who is this Mike Mayock guy and what has he ever done to make him an "expert" on elite football athletes? I've never heard of this guy and all of a sudden he is the "expert" on NFLNetwork. He has D-Mac at number 16 on his list of top 20 players! His reasons are as follows: 1) Small legs and lower body. 2) Dead legs at point of contact. 3) Off field problems. I wonder if this guy ever watched D-Mac play in a game?! I loved it when D-Mac exploded the 40 with a 4.27!

  2. i'd hate to have maycock in charge om teams draft-what a dusche bag!!!!!

  3. pigsfeat,

There's no penalty in being wrong. However, if McFadden doesn't pan out as a professional prospect, then Maycock looks like a genius in retrospect., which is why he and other pundits rail against McFadden.

  4. babycakes is right, what does this Maycock have to lose by saying McFadden will be a bust? Not much. But if it turns out that D-Mac can't cut it in the NFL, (YEA RIGHT) then he is a genius.
But ultimately we as sports fans are responsible for lending ear to every joker out there that wants to spout an opinion. Many of the writers on the websites and the tv guys have great contacts and bring worth while news, but our need for 24/7 info means these guys have to give their opinions on everything as well. I don't care what most of them THINK, I just want to know the facts that they know. Bout the only guys opinions that I really care about are ex-coaches that were winnners. Most of these journalst can't tell you the difference between their earhole and their elbow.

  5. [...] UK-63. The Diamond Hogs Swept Witchia St. over the weekend…Fri 9-4, Sat 5-4, Sun 7-3. Darren McFadden is fast apparently…watch the video. Hillis was the fastest FB at the combine with an unofficial time [...]

  6. Matt Jones moved way up the draft board a few years ago based largely on his 40 time. That may have been a million dollar (or more) 40 yards for McFadden. The real experts will speak when they draft him. If he is able to stay healthy (ain't it always so) he will be a factor in the NFL just like he was in the SEC. The guys a winner! (and someone will get a steal with Hillis!)
