TCU’s Patterson interviewed for Arkansas HC job

TCU head coach Gary Patterson interviewed for the Arkansas football coaching vacancy and may have been the front man for the job had Bobby Petrino not expressed interest after leaving the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Jim Reeves reported Saturday.

He did interviews with Arkansas and Nebraska and, depending on whom you talk to, might have finished second to Bobby Petrino at the first one.

Reeves goes on to quote Patterson as saying:

“Anytime it’s the University of Somewhere, you have to listen,” Patterson said. “Those are the No. 1 universities somewhere, and they have an advantage.”

Reeves wrote that the TCU head coach may have been paid close to $3 million at Arkansas had he been hired. Petrino’s salary is $2.85 million at Arkansas.

Patterson has a 62-25 record in his six seasons as TCU’s head coach. He replaced Dennis Franchione upon his departure to Alabama in 2000 before the squad’s bowl game.

  1. While I do not consider this news, had Petrino not come to Arkansas, Gary Patterson would have been a giant step forward in restoring character and integrity to Arkansas Football that Houston Nutt and James Shibest did their utmost to destroy.

Don’t believe me? Ask a kid raised in Arkansas named Drew Combs that now kicks field goals for Gary Patterson at TCU. Drew went to punt-pass and kick competitions starting when he was six years old. From there, the rest is history on a kid who became a very gifted kicker and is a very fine young man.

Problem is, Drew has a birth defect that deforms one arm. While he’s money from the 40 (and sometimes 50) through the uprights, James Shibest couldn’t help but show his true colors, calling Drew “the one-armed kicker.” He was placed on the practice squad while James in his incompetency and lack of character chose to mis-manage special teams for the Hogs, putting athletes of far less talent in position to miss field goals in games.

Word got around that Drew had talent. That word got to Frank Broyles who suggested that Drew be given a chance to join the active roster. This so infuriated James Shibest that he did his best to put Drew through unreasonable drills that would blow his leg out and then slyly put him in front of Nutt to show Houston how good a kicker he was.

Drew healed and the bottom line is that he left Arkansas to play for a special teams coach at TCU and ultimately Gary Patterson who have degrees on their walls. Shibest? He had his jersey from his playing days on his office wall in Fayetteville.

Hogs fans need to be thankful. Whether its Petrino or as reported above as could have been Patterson, the Razorback Athletic Program is far better off now that unprincipled mongrels no longer have a place on the Hog’s coaching staff.

  2. Hog Fans,

ua87 has been a constant thorn and deterrent to things which are UA Razorbacks.

Watch out for him - I think he’s an enemy plant whom is continuing to try and make Arkansas look bad whenever he (or she) can.

He’s the worst type of commenter - acting like he’s pro Arkansas when he’s characteristically anti-Hogs and is no better than some of the ESPN analysts.

I personally wish ua87 would get lost and not come back, but sometimes cyphers like this are hard to shake.

  3. razorbackintexas,

I think you have me confused with ua65. I don’t know how, but you totally missed my points. I harbor no ill will towards the Hogs. I GRADUATED FROM THE U OF A. Did you? My loyalty to the Razorbacks spans more than 35 YEARS and began when I got soaked and wet in Little Rock one night in 1971 when I watched Joe Ferguson and company take Texas to the woodshed!!

My comments were directed at people who are no longer employed at the U of A, the character of a coach employed at another school and the great fortune we have now that Bobby Petrino is at the helm.

Dude, calm down. I’m on your side.

  4. Being a TCU graduate, that was a very interesting read about the kicker, UA87.

James Shibest was an outstanding player during his day. However, Shibest’s special teams were horribly consistent at the worst possible times and I am happy he is gone.

Hehe.. UA65 is/was definitely a “plant” and I am also pleased to see his disappearance from this site. Again, I enjoyed the read on the Combs kid.

  5. Well, I certainly can’t verify if the story is accurate (not saying it isn’t ua87), I can verify that there is a Drew Combs on TCU’s roster. He is listed as a junior and it says he is from Houston? ua87 mentioned he grew up in Arkansas…guess he moved to Houston at some point. Anyway, would not be surprised on this story because our special teams play was always HORRIBLE under Shibest and Houston!!!

  6. I can validate everything ua87 said. There were also choruses of “crippled kicker” that went around the coaching staff. Very unprofessional for a kid who could have gone to any school in Texas to stay with his friends, but chose Arkansas because of the family tradition. Drew had/has a strong leg, but is more accurate than long. Something Shibest apparently had no interest in while here. I am personally happy to see the change for the better going on at the UA, I think it has reinvigorated not only the program, but the state.

  7. Its down right amazing that I can be vilified in this and I haven’t written or said a thing. I am not a plant. I have alot more than 35 years invested in the Arkansas program and have chosen to no longer support it because of unfounded things being said.
Now, let’s talk about character in coaches:
Arkansas has a head coach who signed an extension with Louisville and then left. That same coach sat across a desk from Atlanta Falcons owner and told him he had a coach and then the next day…that’s right..
    left. Now, boys, that’s character.
I just check in from time to time to laugh at the stupidity.
I swore I wouldn’t comment any more but you guys chose to jump on me when I was minding my own business. You children are good entertainment because you are so stupid you provide humor. You really don’t know a damn thing about the Arkansas program and what its all about.
    Have a great day.

  8. Oh My Lord in Heaven, Papaw is back guys, I knew it was too good to be true! RazorbackinTexas I am most certainly sure that u have 65 and 87 confused. Papaw, I figured one of the twisters got you and the trailerhouse last week. Good for you! Not so good for the rest of us! How is the diet going? Give Granny, Fido, and HDN my regards. I heard they found one of the tires you keep on the roof of your trailer in Holly Springs after the twister. That is a pretty good jaunt from Oxford! HaHa

    Your illegitiamte grandson

  9. 007 go back and look at the January archives “Johnson resigns as UA defensive Coordinator” I think you will get a kick out of it. It will show you that Papaw, I mean UA65 is not good for his word he said he was to good to correspond with trash like us and would not blog on this site again. I guess he just couldn’t help himself! I know its alzheimer’s

  10. UA 65.. nothing personal, but maybe the ole miss site is the place for you?

Bobby Petrino is a better football coach than Houston Nutt could ever hope to be - and, I supported Nutt until almost the very end.

Regardless of how you feel about Nutt or Petrino, the kicker story involving Shibest is disturbing. Moreover, the special teams under Shibest were more than disturbing, they were generally pathetic.

Personally, I think it is time to support and back the program or hit the door. My vote’s with the program.

  11. Hehe.. that’s a funny read, Crittco. Take care dude. I have to get back to the rock pile. Go Hogs!

  12. dfwhogfan1 is right and I am wrong. Drew and his family are from Houston, not any town in Arkansas. As for the rest of the account, a family member of mine is friends with Drew’s Dad and in turn is the basis of my summary of events surrounding Drew’s time as a Hog.

My apologies to each of you for stirring up the return of ua65. Crittcohawger, you have one whale of a sense of humor, much more effective than verbal barbs. In fact, I could actually picture people in my sister’s hometown of Monticello saying those words with that deep accent. It gets funnier and funnier the more that I think about it.

  13. With a lot of unknown extenuating circumstances, the character issues ought to make all of us pause for a moment. But suppose in order to give Petrino some benefit of the doubt, how long did the owner of the Falcons know that Vick was being investigated and would probably be indicted before the owner hired Petrino? Petrino went into Atlanta thinking he had Vick - that’s one of the purposes he went to Atlanta - to use Vick in his offensive scheme. If the owner knew about Vick’s impending indictment long before the Petrino hire and chose not to tell Petrino, then shame on the owner. But when it comes to character among owners, who can claim to be without fault among owners?

And as I understand it, most college coaches have a clause in their contracts that allow them to leave at any moment for the pros. So Petrino’s departure from Louisville was not a breaking of contractual agreements just an exercising of one of it’s options. Now when did Petrino begin talks with Atlanta? That is the bigger question - before he signed the extension or after? Only Petrino knows.

And whether UA65 is really a Nutt homer or not, I have a friend who shared rides with Nutt’s kids to school every day and Nutt’s kids were talking about going to Oxford two weeks before the LSU game. So for those two weeks we hear Nutt repeatedly saying he is a Hog and will be the Hog’s coach the following year all the while talking with the folks at Ole Miss. Hmmm, some character there! And one more thing about Nutt, was he really in deep talks with Nebraska and for the matter LSU before he got those big raises at the UA over the past few years?

Character matters and for the first 7 years of his career at the UA, Nutt was without fault. And then the rumors of being courted by other schools, poor performances, and then the whole Gus/Springdale fab thing. Whether Gus and the Springdale Fab were primarily at fault or not, they did not get a fair shake from Nutt in play calling or playing time as they were promised. “Sure Mitch come play with us, we will pass the ball more”. “Sure Gus, I will allow you to install your offense and call the plays.” “Sure Damian, we will pass the ball ALOT to you.” Eventually, all empty promises.

Though there are a lot of Gus and the Springdale Fab haters on this list, the fault is equally shared between them and Nutt. They were promised something that Nutt shortly after the 3rd game retracted. How they handled the situation - along with their parents is regrettable and childish I might add - but they did have cause for their anger, their hurt and eventual departure. Am I sorry to see them go? YES, I wish they would have stayed. We would be a much better team next year with them particularly now that Petrino is here. Can you imagine Mitch and Damian in their 3rd with Petrino now at the helm!! WOW!

So there is pig slop all over both parties and on the past and present staffs. But in the end, character matters and generally proven over time. So give Petrino some time - Hog nation will not only be watching the score board light up but we’ll also be watching to see if Petrino will be packing his bags for a better place.

  14. hognaustin that was a good read. You made alot of valid points. My question, “who is without flaws?” I can think of but only one, and it aint you 007. “Christ” With that being said, My opinion just like the opposite end of my mouth, Nutt carries 45% of the finger pointing, White 50%, and maybe Gus and the kids from Springdale 5%. It is hard to fault anyone for bettering themselves. That is exactly what Gus did for he and his family. He will probably be a whale of a college coach someday. The kids I cant blame them, their kids! Moms and Dads, though it might not make much sense were looking out for their best interest! Now that leaves us with 2 White and Nutt. White, obviously betrayed the major boosters of the University when he took the cuffs off. I just wonder what his cut was! Nutt, I ask any of you, ” When was the last time you quit your job that was secure for at least another year to take a job not even equal to that of which you had? The answer is “you didn’t ”
Petrino, yeah he has his faults, but I’ll take my chances with his character over Nutt character. Nutt proved he is a thief and manipulator. Petrino, Proved he is not an NFL coach. Who would you rather have?

  15. Dudes, whether Petrino stays one year or ten, the Razorbacks will be on higher ground when he departs. Offensively, we have already seen an upward shift in talent and the defense will be just fine in time.

As to Petrino’s stay in hogland, my money would be on a number closer to double digits. The UA has a fan base and facilities second to none. I have also heard that NW Arkansas is a great area, especially compared to some of the places Petrino has been - or could possibly go, for that matter.

Regardless, in two to three years, the Razorbacks will be playing for the SEC title, if not more. As to the past and present, Houston Nutt is where he belongs and what’s done is done. It’s [beyond] time to move on and enjoy the upward ride wth the program.

  16. That’s what i like about you 007, you always take the high road! Me, well lets just say you don’t have to wander what I’m thinking!

  17. Interesting and funny reads! I have heard many comments about “imagine if Mustain and D-William were here next year”. My response to that is, if they were still here, Nutt, Broyles, and White would still be at the helm. I believe the dominos started falling when the Springdale soap opera started…and I also lay most of the fault with the staff and leadership, although both sides could have handled the situations better.

On a note about the negativity towards Petrino…. most people base their negative opinions on Petrino solely by what the media has to say. We all know there are two sides to the story. We sure don’t need to make a decision on a person’s character based off media input. If you are capable of seeing the bigger picture, you know his character is not that bad. I would have to agree there is only one perfect being, Christ.

I am glad we “Razorback Nation” had to take the hit to begin the time of change. I think the future is very bright for the Razorbacks. I was on the fence with Nutt all last year, but in the end, I fell on the side of change. Change is sometimes hard to take, but when we begin to see the fruits, we will all be some happy campers!!

  18. You guys ( or children) never cease to down right amaze me. First of all, you get personal with your name calling and can’t keep things on an adult level.
Secondly you just blatantly make up junk like the Nutt kids saying two weeks ahead of time they were going to Oxford. I found out what this message board was all about when I was told last week that an associate athletic director at U of A logged in under an assumed name and he was kicked off site for not being anti everything like the rest of you. Fortunate for you cowards who hide behind a log-in name that that man ( or me for that matter) don’t know who you really are.
You would have to stand face to face and say the things you hide and say. By the way, you also kicked that associate AD’s son off sight for sharing opinions different from yours and he’s an assistant football coach at another SEC school. He just wanted to check and see if it was as bad (and ignorant of facts) as his Dad told him. You fellows stink. Not only are you brain dead in football matters… you are a bunch of name calling cowards who don’t have a life. I am retired and use my own time to do this. Most of you are working for somewhat else and getting paid to do this crap on that man’s time and his computer. That’s called stealing…now let’s talk about character.
I will not mislead you again. I am through with you and what’s left of U of A now. I’m ashamed to say I went to school there. All the good men are gone. Broyles and Nutt are gone. One of you (don’t know who) actually wrote a letter to Jerry Jones and said the school didn’t need supporters like him and Jim Lindsey because they were “Broyles Men”. Now, guys, that’s pure intelligence. No one is left up there from the era that produced a top quality program. you have a gypsy who will stay awhile as head coach and then move somewhere else…and an AD who doesn’t know a thing about what he’s doing. I have better things to do with my time than this…and as far as your name calling of Ole Miss and the deep south…there is more class here than there…(now that the good guys are gone)

  19. Gramps (ua65), assuming that is your age, I respect other’s opinions, but you are just plain annoying. I am sure you are one that has a hard time dealing with change. If you can’t post a meaningful blog, don’t waste your or our time with this non-sense.

  20. Brandon, who cares… I thought about applying for the job also!!!!! Why don’t you talk about basketball recruiting or something worthwhile! Geeze…. dude.. Oh by the way, this blog was not about Nutt, Broyles etc…….. let’s stay focused folks!

  21. I was tempted to delete ua65’s post, but I will leave it to serve as a reference to this statement:

We will not tolerate users spreading misinformation on our site. We have never banned a user from this blog for sharing a different opinion and we will never do so.

ua65, I think a little vacation from this blog is in order for you.

  22. Tisk tisk tisk! There is so much to rejoice in and cheer for and all some of you can do is gripe and complaind about what is OVER! Brandon is so eager to report the negative and unflattering because some of you bathe in it!. If your a hog fan, you will realize that pride and enthusiasm in your team, and a positive slant in the news reported on them will do much more to make the team better than all this crap ever will. Who the hell cares about Nutt now that he is gone. I wish him the best, but don’t intend to loose any sleep either way. The Springdale folks made their decision and now their in the same boat as Nutt as far as I’m concerned (ON THEIR OWN). Good luck to them, now please, lets talk about our CURRENT team and let the past be the past. GO HOGS!

  23. So ua65 - you are saying that I and my friend, who is a pastor, are liars? So my pastor friend who heard the Nutt kids talk about Oxford misheard them or “mis-remembers” what he heard? Are you buddies with Roger Clemens? You really are a joy to read. Please keep it up!

  24. Papaw, I sure am gonna miss you, Please let Granny and Fido know I am going to miss them. Papaw, you were the only idiot on this website, and you are so easy! as for your comments, Blah blah blah, your story is old! You along with HDN and Ole Miss can all go to Hell!!!!!!!

The last words your illegitimate grandson will speak to you for a while since you are going on a little vacation.

  25. crittcohawger,

Dude, you’ve got to come up to St. Louis sometime and do your standup routine in a comedy club. Hee..hee. I’d be sitting in the front row to cheer you on!!

  26. Man they would throw me out of a Comedy Club, I would probably offend the owner’s ugly daughter or something, Come on down to Memphis & we’ll hook up and do the Beale thing, Call the Hogs in Silky’s Piano Bar raise a little cain and hope my ole lady would bale us out.
P.S. I’ll bet Papaw’s Single wide, he’s back blogging by the middle of next week. Then again maybe not, just talked to Granny, says if she catches him on the computer again she will take his Viagra from him. Man, I bet that one horn billy goat he’s got tied to the magnolia tree is hoping Granny catches him!!!! BAAAAA

  27. Robyn,
Please let Papaw (ScreenName ua65), remain a fixture on this site. I have so much fun with him! Who is to say how long it will take for another idiot to chime in on this site. Quick fix let’s keep him around til a bigger idiot shows up!!

  28. I’m all over that Beale thing!! Got caught as a minor in Silky’s during the ‘84 Liberty Bowl week. (damn law changed from 18 to 21 just a few months prior and who was I to know). Had the Razorback Band Director found out, I probably would not have even been at the game much less did the halftime show (oops let the cat out of the bag that I was a band geek, well not all four years). Got an older brother who’s also a UA grad living just north of Memphis. All for one and one for all!! That would be fun.
