Former Hog great Joe Ferguson in ICU

Former Razorbacks quarterback Joe Ferguson is in the hospital after being diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia, according to a Web site updated by family friends and his wife, Sandy.Joe Ferguson

Ferguson was admitted into the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston some time in January, where he was also diagnosed with pneumonia on Feb. 3 and admitted into the intensive care unit.

The former Buffalo Bills quarterback, who holds the Arkansas single game record for most pass completions (31) against Texas A&M in 1971, had previously been diagnosed with Stage 4 Burkitt’s Lymphoma in 2005. At that time, the cancer spread into Ferguson’s chest, small intestines, colon and spine, according to the Web site. He recovered from the battle with cancer before the emergence of last month’s bout.

Ferguson was selected by Buffalo in the third round of the 1973 NFL Draft. In his 16-year pro career, the former Hog passed for 29,817 yards and 196 touchdowns.
