Positive on Petrino

Arkansas head football coach Bobby Petrino has been roundly roasted for leaving the Atlanta Falcons to become the Hogs’ head football coach. Of course, that’s old news, but the editor’s at www.coacheshotseat.com feel the Razorbacks made an excellent hire, rating it a 10 out of 10, and that Petrino might fit in better here in the Boston Mountains than he did at Louisville and Atlanta.

“Petrino has the one “X factor” that is so rarely found inside of head football coaches these days. That “X factor” is “IT.” What exactly “IT” is, is hard to define, but as Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart said about something else, “I know it when I see it.” Bobby Marks who played for Paul “Bear” Bryant at Alabama said about Coach Bryant, “I don’t know what he had, but he had a lot of it.” Both of those quotes could easily apply to Bobby Petrino, and his hiring by Arkansas and his arrival in the SEC alters the balance of power in that conference for as long as Petrino decides Arkansas is the place he wants to be.”

The article not only grades the coaching change at Arkansas but at all the other major schools as well.

  1. Go Hogs! This article was an excellent read and gives many reasons for the hiring of Bobby Petrino. In two to three years, the Razorbacks will be competing for BCS pairings. And who knows, ol’ Bobby may have just found himself a home in hog land.

Give this guy a little bit of time, hog fans. He will take the program to a higher level.

  2. My sentiments exactly! I think it’s going to take some time, but the wheels of change are definetly in motion and we as fans can aid this along by trying to remain positive and give these new folks a chance. AD Long, and coaches Petrino and Pelphrey are new and bring new approaches. We’ve hired them, lets give them our support and GO HOGS.

PS, I hope the state press will join in and try to focus more on the positives than the negatives. At least until we’ve had time to see the full direction were heading into.

  3. Time will tell.

  4. 007 you hit the nail on the head, give them the time and the support. I think we will be surprised at the excitement and success the future holds!!
    Go Hogs!

  5. Petrino is an interesting hire in that he has made the total more than the sum of the parts in many of his past stops. Most BCS programs have very good coaches that run good offenses and defenses, but it is talent level that becomes the tie breaker in most cases. Petrino has skewed the numbers in a couple of areas in the past. He has taken average-rated recruits (his Louisville teams were ranked between #34 and #50 mosts seasons at Louisville– which was several spots behind Ark. each year), yet regularly ranked much higher in the final pols each season with that talent (couple top 15 finishes and couple more Top 25’s). He did this by having offensive and defensive schemes that allowed him to play with and beat teams that may have had better raw talent than him (if you believe the recruiting services know best). But he also regularly found sleeper recruits, who actually turned out to be better athletes than their ratings showed. Both of these factors are what allow Hog fans to dream big about a BCS spot. We will not out-recruit schools like LSU, Florida, Auburn and Alabama, at least not any time soon, as the past history of recruiting classes clearly shows. Nutt’s staff also found some sleeper recruits (Jamal Anderson, Jonathan Luigs, Steven Parker, Monk, Chris Houston are a few recent ones), but that was not possible to do every year. The difference is Petrino has schemes which can make average players good, and good ones great, if players are used correctly, and that is how a “2nd Tier SEC team like Arkansas” (not my words) can compete. It could be interesting, but playing in the SEC every week is the big difference vs. Conf. USA and Big East.

  6. I don’t agree that Arkansas can’t recruit with LSU, Florida, Auburn, and Alabama. What thev’e had that we lacked was a coach/scheme that clicked with the kids. Petrino definitely offers that possibility. We play in the SEC just like they do. Our facilities are second to none. Even his most ardent detractors admit that our coach takes a backseat to none in coaching ability, and he will run a version of the spread that is so popular now. What is lacking is the swagger a top notch progam exhibits to everone interested in football. As long as we believe we are 2nd Tier, thats exactly where we will remain. Petrino doesn’t belive it, I don’t believe it, and you shouldn’t believe it if your truly a Hog Fan. Stop whining! Carry yourself in a way that exhibits the positive! If we would all do this, Hog Ball would become what we all hope for and then some.

  7. Nice read, hog fan. I agree. The UA has some of the best facilities in the country. The fan base is second to none. These are two reasons the Razoracks landed Bobby Petrino to begin with.

Give Petrino a couple of years, but it is well past the time for the fans have a different mindset. There is nothing second tier about the UA. Nothing.

And by the way, lets stop acting like UT is the most important team the Razorbacks will ever play. It puts way too much pressure on the situation and I am absolutely convinced we have lost more than our share of those games for THAT very reason. Too much pressure. UT is just another NON conference foe. There’s no reason to give them any more credit than is due. Every SEC game is more important than the UT game. GO HOGS!

  8. HogFan1509. Feel free to disagree, but don’t put words in that are not there. I stated clearly the the “2nd tier SEC program” comment was not mine. I have seen it written several times in numerous ways, both by writers of other SEC programs and national writers, like Pat Forde. I will repeat, not my words. The fact I repeated them does not make them true, and certainly does not add to the credibility of the statement, but acting like these things are not out there is a bit naive. Recruits read these things too. You can’t blame everything on the coach. Arkansas has had a great fan base for years. Our facilities have been top notch for years. We have rarely been ranked higher than 20 by Scouts or Rivals in recruiting class over past 6 years. Petrino never got top 10 recruiting classes at Louisville. Spurrier has been at South Carolina, an SEC program, several years now, is a Hall of Fame college coach with a national title, yet he ranks 26th recruiting this year on Rivals/38th on Scout. His last 4 classes have ranked 9th, 7th, 8th, 4th, 6th in the SEC (per Rivals). A lot of this is bias in the system, that if a kids commits to Florida or Alabama, he must be a 4-star or 5-star. It is a subjective system. I simply said don’t expect Ark. to suddenly rank high, mainly because Petrino does not recruit based on ratings of players, but rather on guys that fit his system.
No need to preach sunshine, or exhibit positiveness. Nothing negative about my post at all. I would say don’t be so defensive, as we are all on the same side of the fence.

  9. Sorry, but I must disagree with you. Were not on the same side of the fence. You choose to stand outside the fence and make excuses for our past short commings. I choose to jump the fence and get into the mix. Your statement that the system rates some recruits as 4 or 5 star simply because of who recruits them is partially true. Those teams and their fans don’t whine because they were beat out. They double there efforts, and usually prevail in the end. We must quit thinking we have no chance to compete with them and begin to battle them with the same confidence that they exhibit when they compete with us. They NEVER recruit or against us or play our team thinking they will need luck to beat us. They are shocked when we beat them. They truly believe they’re the best and until we begin to believe were better nothing will change. How do you think it looks to the rest of the country when all they read/hear from us is 2nd tier, bottom half, etc. Get real, that ain’t gonna change nuthin!

  10. Hogfan1509. You are obviously angry and looking for an argument, and since you can’t find one, you are reading stuff in that is simply not there. I note this so you can reply to this as well with more arguments against statements that are not there. You keep accusing me of whinning, yet I don’t do that. I don’t complain, say things are not fair, or things are there that prevent us from being successful. No idea where you are reading, but not my post. No excuses made at all. You need to stop taking one statement and building an angry tirade around it, when it is one sentence among several. I do like how your solution to everything wrong in the world is to simply act like nothing is wrong. If we act confident as fans, simply keep saying we are the best and that we deserve the best, then it will magically happen. I am pretty sure that most successful programs got there by just acting positive. Again, I have no problem with positive approach, as you can tell from my posts. You don’t have to agree with any of it, but don’t call it whinning, since the only whinning is you going on about how negativity is the only reason we have not won the last three national titles. Zig Zigler would be so proud to have you as a pupil. You choice to attack for a statement that does not completely agree with yours shows that you utopia of Hog fan love will not be attained any time soon, by your own doing. Again, I have not argued with your view, just your decision to resort to name calling and attacking. Feel free to point out all the whinning and excuses here that I am not aware of.
