Arkansas wins national title … in beauty
We told you last week about the University of Arkansas cheerleader competing in the finals of CBSSports.com’s College Cheerleader of the Year playoffs.
Well, despite some mouse-clicking cheaters who forced the competition to be rebooted, Rogers native Laura Cole still came through as a No. 1 seed to defeat No. 7 Houston on Thursday in the national championship, by a 54-46 percentage margin.
Ms. Cole seemed peppy in a “postgame” interview with Roland Liwag, producer of CBSSports.com’s SPiN section.
SPiN: Do you have something to say to the people who’ve voted for you throughout the tournament?
Cole: “I guess, ‘Thank you.’ Thanks for taking the time to vote and I appreciate it. I hope that I represent them and our state well.”
Congratulations to Laura.
Doesn’t it seem weird to anyone that Arkansas keeps racking up national titles for best cheerleader and mascot in these alternative competitions? Perhaps the national media feels sorry for the Arkansas folks.
Nah.
Maybe someday a UA athletics program — besides track, people — will win all the marbles.

I’ve noticed that anything that deals with an online poll tends to be dominated by Arkansas and a few other schools. Especially on the SEC Sports website. I think it is because the Razorbacks have one of the most passionate fanbases in the country. I’ve been in the Army since I graduated from UA in 1994, and I have found that most people I talk to route for several different teams between college and professional sports. Arkansas fans are “whole hog” for the Razorbacks, and it shows in popularity contests like this one. Congratulations to Laura — she would have gotten my vote even if she wasn’t a Razorback!
